Death of REIN Member

It is with great regret that I make this announcement of my mother Marilyn Bryan's death. She passed away suddenly at the age of 71 from a massive stroke on the evening of May 3, 2013.

Marilyn was a REIN member for more than 10 years and during that time purchased over 11 million dollars worth of real estate rental properties mostly in Edmonton, Alberta. (Prior to her investing in Edmonton real estate she and my dad built an empire of farmland in southern Saskatchewan around Central Butte and Moose Jaw.) Her intention was to create wealth for the future generations of her family. Her company Baker Ventures Inc. was named after her late father which she never had the gift of knowing though he died when she was 43 years old. She named her company after him to show respect for him and to carry on his name.

Our family is mourning but we stand as a unit and are determined to carry out her dream and with the help from my Dad we are confident we can do it despite the road blocks that face us.

For those of you who had the opportunity to meet her, I'm sure you could tell she was a kind and sweet lady. She conducted her self with integrity therefore you could always trust her.

She was a wonderful mother to her 7 children, 26 grandchildren and 11 great grand children. She was also an outstanding wife to my Dad who is 81 years old. My parents were married for 52 years. We lucked out having her in our lives.

We are a Saskatchewan family therefore she is buried in a small cemetery just outside of Tugaske, Saskatchewan.

There are endless stories and memories and we hold them close.

North Shore Vancouver Living?

I read a few posts about living in the North Shore of Vancouver and was wondering what made the property so expensive. I have never been but I was reading about a few of the schools they have there and liked it so I was hoping to get a few comments on what it is like to live there.

I understand this is a real estate forum.

Silver tanked big time last week to a three year low, to about $22/ounce, and if you look at 5 or even 10 year charts it is on an upwards trendline. Silver is not only trading at a lower multiple to gold than usual, it also has far more industrial use than gold, so it is both an inflation hedge as well as an industrial metal participating in Asian (or North American) economic growth.

I am not a stock nor precious metal expert, but see value in having other "hard" assets besides real estate, especially silver. I would like your view on where you see Silver prices in a year, two, five or ten years ? why ?

I also would like to know what a good investment platform would be if you believed silver is on the rise.

ETFs (which one) ?
Physical silver (what type/form) ?
Specific silver producing stocks (which ones) ?
Specific silver exploration company stocks (which ones) ?

Alberta - Diesel and Jet Fuel

Hi All,

I know there are quite a few Alberta oil sands experts out there. I was told by a colleague that Alberta produces Diesel and Jet Fuel but does not produce Gasoline. If this is true, are there any good online resources on why this might be the case? Why doesn't Alberta just refine?

1st decent biz video made!

I've made my first decent video for my tour business! Second try at www.italycookingschools.com/blog . First video got mixed reviews! See both at www.YouTube.com/margaretcowan

I made it with a friend who films himself for his biz videos in his living room, where we filmed my video. We projected one of my Italy photos on a blank wall with my old LCD projector and used a regular video camera to shoot.

If you have a web site and want to make videos, you could do this too.

As well as my friend & fellow Toastmaster, Roger Killen, I also thank Jaeny Baik of Jaeny Baik Media at www.jaenybaik.com for her wonderful, "hands-on" workshop I attended. Thanks to her, I made my first video and improved the 2nd one. She's a former CBC broadcaster and coaches business owners on making their videos or makes your video for you. Highly recommend her!

I'm going to Calgary for the Paul Stoltz event so want to also visit some travel agencies where business owners/execs and professionals would go to book trips to Italy, including cooking & wine tours to Italy.

Where are the areas in Calgary where well to do people live? I don't know Calgary well at all.

If you can suggest travel agencies in Calgary for this demographic, that's even better.

Here’s what today’s college students should know about fossil fuels:

As a direct result of America’s large and growing reserves of natural gas, there has been a dramatic decline in greenhouse-gas emissions. The fact is, carbon emissions in the United States have fallen by 13 percent over the last five years and are now at their lowest level since1992, around the time when many of today’s college students were born (see chart above).

Southern Ontario REIN Members Who Want To Ski

If there are any REIN members (and their friends/family) located in southern Ontario who want to snow ski this winter (and talk about real estate on the chairlift), feel free to join me any Friday at Blue Mt and every other Sunday at Mt St Louis.

I'm also a Level 2 CSIA certified ski instructor so I'll be teaching adult classes at both Blue and Mt St Louis. I'm also a staff instructor at Glen Eden Mondays to Wednesdays so some weeks, I'll be on the snow up to five days per week, ie, already living part of my 'Belize'!

For first timers, I'm also running a Discover Ski evening on Saturday Jan 12 at Glen Eden where they have a special package that includes lift ticket, all rentals and 1.5 lesson with yours truly as your instructor. This is the only time each winter where I'll teach an adult Discover Ski session and we have room for only 7 participants maximum. They also have Discover Snowboard programs there too but I won't be teaching those.

If interested in any of these, get in touch with me and I'll look forward to being on the snow with fellow REIN members this winter!

In January, when my boyfriend and I moved to Germany for the year we made the decision to find an inexpensive apartment. After three weeks of searching we settled on a 215 sq. ft. studio.

We have both lived in many small apartments - ranging from 300 to 700 sq. ft. - but never shared such a confined space. However, I've always been fascinated with the micro-lofts in Vancouver, and we were eager to put our small space living skills to the test.

Greetings Edmonton and area REIN and Forum members.

I would like to organize a Habitat for Humanity REIN Build day in the near future and I would like to know how many people would be interested in volunteering.

If you think it's too bleepin' cold, then you will be happy to learn that they have an indoor prefab shop. (I am awaiting confirmation on possible dates.)

And if you have never so much as wielded a hammer, you may be interested in Habitat's BASIC TOOL TRAINING WORKSHOP: "Our last workshop date for 2012 is Wednesday, November 28th. We will be hosting four dates in January: Jan 5, 10, 19, and 25th. Sign up on our scheduling system or contact Shefali at 780-451-3416 ext 234 or skhoja@hfh.org . This workshop is open to current volunteers, or people interested in volunteering for Habitat. Sign up, and feel free to invite a friend to register as well!"
