CMHC reports quickening pace in residential construction





HALIFAX, NS] ` Housing starts in Halifax were trending at 3,375 units in March, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). The trend is a six month moving average of the monthly seasonally adjusted annual rates (SAAR) of housing starts.



`The pace of residential construction in Halifax increased in March,` said Matthew Gilmore, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for Halifax. `The quickening pace was attributed to increased levels of activity in the multiples segment of the market,` added Gilmore.

Moncton rental vacancy rate nears 20-year high




Moncton`s rental vacancy rate is now near a 20-year high but that is not stopping developers from building hundreds of new rental units in the city.




The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. pegs the city`s rental vacancy rate at 6.7 per cent.




"[This] is somewhat high for this market, and it's probably one of the highest vacancy rates we've seen in the last two decades,` said Claude Gautreau, an official with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in New Brunswick.

Mt. Pearl senior housing to get an economic boost




The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corp. (NLHC) has committed $400,000 to a private developer to build affordable housing for seniors in Mount Pearl, The Telegram has learned. And the city is providing the land.




NLHC CEO Len Simms said his officials reviewed 70 proposals submitted to the Private Sector Affordable Housing Program, which is cost-shared between the province and the federal government, and chose Karwood Contracting`s plan for a seniors complex.

St. John's enjoying good times




A St. John`s councillor finds it hard to contain his pride when he discusses the prosperity the region is experiencing.

St. John youth plan to leave




Two-thirds of Saint John teenagers don't see themselves staying in the region within 10 years, according to a new survey by the Greater Saint John Community Foundation.




The Youth Vital Signs report looked at how high school students view Saint John, how they feel about growing up in the city and what needs to be improved.
