Jobs created in Whitby

Credit is due to the Atlantic Packaging in Whitby for its effort and foresight in re-purposing the once-shuttered paper mill on the shore of Lake Ontario.

The result is an expansion at the familiar site, part of a provincial energy program that allows industrial companies to take advantage of reduced electricity rates in exchange for expansions or new facilities that create new jobs. The deal struck between the Province and Atlantic Packaging sees the company now producing 100 per cent recycled, lightweight paper used to manufacture high-performance corrugated cardboard products.

Condo developers start 2014 with record number of launches

Developers are so optimistic that confidence has returned to the condo market, they`ve launched sales of a record number of new units ` more than 2,700 ` in January and February alone.

And more are planned, with new project launches scheduled unusually late, into May, as builders see a surge of pent-up demand after the downturn of the last two years, especially for condos close to the Toronto core.

Toronto condo sales soar

Sales of new condos in the Toronto area last month hit the highest level ever for the month of March, according to research firm RealNet Canada Inc., as buyers remained active in one of the country`s most worrisome markets.

While the country`s housing market is just digging itself out of a winter slump, sales of new condos in Toronto have been ramping up. That`s despite the fact that Toronto condos are at the top of economists` and policy makers` watch lists.

Think bigger on second suites, public tells Barrie

Barrie needs to think bigger ` at least that`s what property owners told the city last week at an open house about second suites.

As Barrie refines its draft affordable housing strategy, it`s turning to you to assess if its plan for second suites ` which will be permitted in all the city`s neighbourhoods ` is a viable one.

The proposal is to allow one unit, ranging from 35 to 50 square metres, per home which, by provincial law, must have a kitchen and bathroom.
