B.C. loses laid-back work title in Statistics Canada survey to Quebec in survey

In the employment field, at least, B.C. can no longer lay claim to the title of Canada`s laid-back capital.

A new Statistics Canada survey concludes, among other things, that British Columbians no longer work the least average number of hours per week -- that honour now goes to Quebec, with B.C. bumped to second spot.

City makes inroads in war against graffiti

Eight months into her job as the City of Burnaby`s anti-graffiti coordinator, Kathy Wipf has made huge inroads.

A simple look at the numbers tells the story.

A new graffiti bylaw that took effect on Sept. 1, 2007 has seen 130 bylaw notices sent out to businesses or homeowners instructing them to get graffiti removed.

Road can handle it

City council received the engineering report on Chilliwack Mountain Road that they commissioned at Monday`s meeting, and some residents will not be happy with the findings.

"Capacity analysis indicates that the current road geometric can accommodate the expected traffic volumes up to year 2027," said the report written by Borg Chan, senior transportation engineer for ISL Engineering and Land Services.

Consumers warned to beware three types of fraud

Solicitor General John Les is warning British Columbians about three common types of fraud perpetrated over the past year.

"Web-based commerce is opening new horizons for scammers, while others rely on tried-and-true schemes," Les, the minister responsible for consumer protection, said in a news release.

Microsoft settles into Richmond

The Microsoft Canada Development Centre is beginning to feel right at home in Richmond. Now if only its employees could actually find homes, the organization will be set.

"We`re thankful to the city of Richmond and the people of Richmond for accepting us with open arms," said managing director Parminder Singh, who says the welcome he and his employees have received here has been overwhelming.

Coleman disputes homeless estimate

The province`s housing minister says a recent report on the cost of homelessness to taxpayers will have little impact on his long-term housing plan.

"There`s no question we`re on the right track," Rich Coleman said Sunday. "We have a housing strategy in B.C. It is a very aggressive and successful program that needs time to work."

Property owners look for Olympic gold

The number of people looking to strike Olympic gold by renting out their homes during the 2010 Games has grown from a trickle to a flood in recent weeks.

The number of listings in Vancouver and Whistler, and websites aimed at cashing in on the rental craze, are multiplying. And there are some signs that the Whistler Olympic market might have already become saturated.

Ben Thomas, owner of VIP Mountain Holidays, a major rental agency in the resort, said he`s been told that sponsors will focus their hospitality programs in Vancouver.

Power-line towers a shocking precedent

Last week`s announcement by Energy Minister Richard Neufeld that high-voltage overhead power lines will be built over a Tsawwassen residential neighbourhood and secondary school should serve as a warning.

If B.C.`s government can stomp on Tsawwassen taxpayers, who did their best to provide Victoria with viable alternatives for completion of the $260-million power line to Vancouver Island, then it can stomp on anyone, anywhere.

Stakes are high for B.C. in coal price talks

Although contracts expire in less than a week, coal miners and their customers are still in the dark about the new price for a tonne of steelmaking coal.

Elk Valley Coal president and chief executive officer Boyd Payne wouldn`t divulge details of negotiations, nor the British Columbia-based coal giant`s expectations for the amount of money it will receive per tonne of product.

B.C. court system appears to side with fraud artists

A sloppy provision of the federal Bills of Exchange Act, the complacency -- or is it the complicity? -- of the B.C. court system, and Money Mart`s business practices continue to make life easy for fraud artists.

That`s the shameful picture I still see when, seven months after my last column on the subject -- and prodded by a call from a 71-year-old who appears doomed to become another victim -- I peer back into this unpleasant world.

Beetle damage hits salmon runs, report says

If rising water temperatures weren`t enough of a danger to Pacific salmon, the effects of the mountain pine beetle infestation are adding to salmon`s woes, scientists say.

Both events are related to global warming.

The grain-of-rice-sized beetles have chewed through Interior pine forests covering an area four-times the size of Vancouver Island, says a report released Tuesday by the federally funded Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council.

B.C. sales figures rank dead last among provinces

Retail sales in B.C. placed dead last among the provinces in January in an underwhelming performance one economist suggests may be a blip.

B.C. was the only province in Canada to see a sales decline in January as month-over-month sales shrank by 0.2 per cent, Statistics Canada said yesterday.

Hi. I am not a news geek as I do not most of the material I post. I spend maybe 5-10 seconds scanning each item. Just follow the REIN systems and you will do fine.

After feast on B.C. forest, pine beetles face famine

VANCOUVER -- An end is in sight to British Columbia`s mountain pine beetle infestation, largely because the bugs have eaten through most of the trees that had sustained them. Doug Routledge, vice-president of the Council of Forest Industries, said that it will take years to harvest dead trees for whatever value the wood has, but that the current phase of beetle activity is winding down

Railways gouging farmers for grain transport, groups charge

WINNIPEG — Canadian farm groups say a new report shows the rail industry is earning excessive profits on the backs of farmers. A study commissioned by the Canadian Wheat Board argues that Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railway, which own nearly all of Canada`s rail lines, have taken more than $100-million a year in "unreasonably excessive returns" for transporting Prairie grain to port.

"Farmers are being held captive by railway monopolies," said Bob Friesen, president of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture. "They`re victimized by that monopoly and they`re currently being gouged in what is being charged for moving that grain."

Province rules against power line in park

An independent power company`s controversial proposal to run a transmission line through Pinecone Burke Provincial Park came to an abrupt halt Wednesday when Environment Minister Barry Penner announced he is rejecting it outright.

Penner`s decision came a day after more than 1,000 people jammed a public meeting in Pitt Meadows to voice their opposition to the proposal by Run of River Power. It wants to connect seven small hydro projects in the Upper Pitt River Valley to BC Hydro`s provincial electricity grid via a power line through the park, but Penner made it clear no line will be built in the park.

Little relief in sight for condo buyers

Metro Vancouver condominium prices are forecast to climb over five per cent this year and average 3.5 per cent a year for the next four years, according to a report released Wednesday by the Conference Board of Canada and Genworth Financial Canada.

A strong B.C. economy, an aging population and continued immigration are cited as factors in keeping prices high, according to the report. The average condo is expected to increase in price by 3.5 per cent a year out to 2012.

B.C. looking beyond Mexico to find fruit pickers

To cope with a continuing shortage in apple and cherry pickers, B.C. fruit growers are expecting to hire about 50 per cent more temporary foreign workers than they did last year.

And in an attempt to diversify this expanding pool, they are reaching beyond Mexico to find similar workers from the Caribbean.

Mike Wallace of the Western Agriculture Labour Initiative (WALI) said that while a contract with workers from Mexico is going into its fifth year, a new one with the Commonwealth of Carribean Islands was only hammered out at the end of July 2007.
