Manitoba's unemployment rate up slightly in January





Manitoba`s unemployment rate edged up in January to 5.6 per cent according to Statistics Canada even though employment in the province increased by 2,600.

Unemployment up in Manitoba





According to Statistics Canada, the unemployment rate in Manitoba went up slightly last month ` to 5.6%, up from 5.5% in December of last year. Subsequently, the amount of unemployed in the province went up from approximately 37,000 to 37,700 in that same time frame.





Despite the rise in unemployment, the employment rate in Manitoba rose from 64.4% to 64.6%.

Major new projects drive construction growth in Manitoba





Manitoba ` Hydro projects planned in Manitoba`s North will jump-start construction job growth and demand for specialized trades, according to BuildForce Canada.





The 2014`2023 Construction and Maintenance Looking Forward forecast released today by BuildForce Canada shows a pattern of steady growth in residential and non-residential construction over the next 10 years. A pause in job growth this year and next eases recruitment challenges, with one noted exception. A new round of scheduled hydro projects in the North adds to construction employment growth over the next decade. Hiring will peak for a large number of specialized trades in 2016, and in 2020 and 2022.

Regina office vacancies rising





With 200,000 square feet of vacant space and more than three times that being developed, Regina is heading toward higher office vacancies, according to Colliers International.








Regina's combined office vacancy rate currently sits at 5.2 per cent and is expected to increase to 6.5 per cent by 2014.

Saskatoon industrial slows





Despite a drop in the vacancy rate, Saskatoon is seeing a mounting inventory of complete and empty new industrial space, according to a report from ICR Commercial.





ICR found that 134,700 square feet of industrial is under construction but that 63 per cent of the 365,000 square feet completed this year remains unoccupied
