Rail service is perceived as being more "permanent" than bus service, because buses can generally easily be rerouted. Rail is also perceived as having a higher level of service and thus more competitive with the automobile. Lastly, rail service attracts and supports a higher densities of development than typical bus service. (page 4, right hand column, last full paragraph)


I'd be careful about making plans to invest large amounts of money based on transportation effects from increased bus service. Rail has a much higher rate of success.
