Housing remains a major issue in Estevan





It`s starting to sound like something of a broken record, but housing remained a major issue in Estevan in 2013.








As has been the case since the economy began to boom five years ago, Estevan continued to suffer from a lack of rental accommodations and, more importantly to some, a lack of affordable accommodations.

Heading into the New Year with Canada`s lowest unemployment rate and a record population growth, 2014 looks bright for Saskatchewan. But with a new year comes some new challenges, including a hit to your bottom line.








Expect to pay higher taxes and more for basic services including electricity, natural gas, and even internet usage.

Building permits in Regina in 2013 fall short of record





Regina's mayor is glad more housing is coming into the city, even if the work that is being done is technically less valuable.








The city has been setting records for at least the last seven years when it comes to issuing building permits. But the totals for the dollar value of all the permits issued in 2013 is about $40 million less than the record $773 million granted the year prior.

Saskatoon issues $1.1 billion in building permits in 2013





Saskatoon set a new record in 2013 for the value of building permits issued.





The city`s Building Standards issued building permits valuing $1,088,500,000, beating the 2013 record total permit value of $1,082,100,000 by 0.6 per cent.

Saskatchewan still has the best outlook for employment in Canada





A newcomer to Regina insists that Saskatchewan really is the place to be if you need a job, as the province continues to buck the national trend with the lowest unemployment rate in the country.






Canada's unemployment rate as a whole rose, to 7.2 per cent while this province dropped to 3.9 per cent. The next closest province is Alberta at 4. 8 per cent and the province with the highest unemployment is Prince Edward Island at 11.5 per cent. In December Regina's unemployment rate rose to 4.2 per cent, the city is tied with Saskatoon for the best unemployment rate in metropolitan cities.

College releases report on the Bakken and housing





The Southeast Regional College (SRC) hopes to be involved with an affordable housing project in the community that will be able to address the college's student needs, and help businesses solve their labour shortage.








President and CEO Dion McGrath released The Bakken Formation Economic Impact Assessment Report, compiled by McNair Business Development, at the January meeting of the Estevan Chamber of Commerce. The study examines the economic impact of the Bakken oil formation, and the effect it has had on Estevan's rental housing supply.

Brandon home sales end 2013 on strong note





December statistics posted by the Canadian Real Estate Association show that the housing market in Brandon ended 2013 on a strong note.








There were a total of 31 sales of single detached homes in the city of Brandon in December ` a huge 72 per cent jump over a weak December in 2012. Any December sales figure above the 30 unit mark is considered quite strong by historical standards.

Housing crunch continues in Manitoba





WINNIPEG ` Across Canada, housing prices slowed down in 2013, but in Manitoba, there are no signs of the housing crunch abating. Last month, the average house price in Winnipeg surpassed $300,000 for the first time ever, according to new data from the Canadian Real Estate Association. Good news if you are looking to sell, but tougher if you are just getting into the housing market.

Winnipeg's hot industrial market





Pure Industrial Real Estate Investment Trust has bought in big to the Winnipeg industrial sector, said to be the tightest such market in the country.





In July, the Vancouver-based REIT closed the $15.1 million purchase of 1725 Inkster Boulevard, Winnipeg, a 265,843-square-foot industrial complex on 12.7 acres. The property is 100 per cent leased on long-term leases to quality tenants, including the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

Luxury home sales break records in Saskatoon and Regina





More people are buying luxury homes for higher prices than ever before.





That's according to the RE/MAX Upper End Report released Tuesday, which uses data from 16 local real estate boards across Canada.

Rental company in need of Regina tenants





February isn't usually the time of year most people would choose to move, but now might be a good time to do just that.








Boardwalk Rental Communities is offering rental incentives in many of their buildings across Regina. David McIlveen, the company's Director of Community Development, said they're offering incentives because about three per cent of their 2,500 units in the city are currently vacant.
