A snapshot of Manitoba's workforce

Manitoba workers are older, luckier at the job hunt and tend to be homebodies compared to other Canadians.

They're also more likely to work in agriculture.

New data from Statistics Canada's national household survey, done in 2011, paint a reasonably rosy picture of the province's labour force.

Estevan vacancy vacuum hits new low

It's a new low for the rental market in Estevan.

The semiannual rental property report from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation shows that Estevan had zero rental accommodations available in April. It's a number that shouldn't be a surprise to anybody who has paid close attention to the city's rental market; perhaps the biggest surprise is that this dubious number hasn't been attained previously.

City of Regina building behind last year's record pace

Building permit values totalled $57.7 million in June, slightly better than half the $107.9 million in permits posted in June 2012, according to the monthly building permit report from the City of Regina. That brings total permits for the first half to $328.9 million, about $20 million behind last year's record pace of $348 million for the first six months.

While lagging last year's pace, Mayor Michael Fougere said he wasn't pushing the panic button as there are a number of large-scale projects on the drawing board that should be applying for permits this year. "One month is not a trend,'' Fougere said Tuesday. "It's not the end of the world."

Saskatchewan has lowest unemployment rate in Canada

In June, employers in Canada took a break from hiring after going on a binge in May. Economists had been expecting payback from May`s purported growth of 95,000 jobs, and they got it with last month`s flat reading.

The economy lost 400 jobs, statistically leaving Canada`s unemployment rate on hold at 7.1 per cent. The prairies still have the lowest jobless rates ` Saskatchewan being the lowest, at 3.7 per cent. Both Alberta and Manitoba have a 5 per cent unemployment rate.

Regina building boom

When Premier Brad Wall takes the stage at the Saskatchewan Real Estate Forum this month he'll be addressing perhaps the most confident real estate crowd in Canada.

"The last five years in Regina have been better than the preceding 15 years," said Karin Developments Ltd. president Kevin Reese, a Forum panelist who isn't surprised at the action in a city where building permits have set annual records for 10 years and property values have soared.

"I always felt Regina was underperforming its potential," he said.

Spotlight on Moose Jaw

It's going to be a busy season on Saskatchewan Highways. Construction crews will be out in full force, tending to deteriorated and bad stretches of highway.

Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA Greg Lawrence says safe travel is an absolute necessity, especially here in Saskatchewan.

"We've had to increase the spending on highways to keep up with infrastructure, so we can promote growth here in Saskatchewan. It's how we get our goods to market and we need the good highways to do that."

Retail vacancies creep down

Despite adding more than 200,000 square feet of retail space to the market in the last 12 months, retail vacancy rates in Saskatoon fell from 2.89 per cent to 2.24 per cent, says a new report by Colliers International.

"Saskatoon's retail market has been growing so fast that some people might be worried we are overbuilt in retail," Colliers research manager Duncan Mayer said. "But this has been ongoing for the last five or six years now, and we haven't been showing any signs of slowing down as far as retail growth."

New water fees coming down the pipe for developments outside Regina city limits

Mayor Michael Fougere is defending the city's plan to impose new utility connection fees for developments outside city limits despite criticism that the new charges could inhibit growth.

The city's executive committee on Wednesday passed a temporary policy that, if approved by city council, would hike the cost of hooking up to the city's water, waste water and storm water lines for developers and residents located outside Regina

Inflation spikes up in Manitoba

The inflation rate rose twice as quickly in Manitoba compared to the rest of the country in June and economists say this province will see another hit in July with the effects of the one-percentage-point increase in the PST.

Statistics Canada reported the inflation rate -- or the consumer price index (CPI) -- rose 2.7 per cent last month in Manitoba, compared to 1.2 per cent in the rest of the country.
