Irving pulp mill to get $450 million upgrade





SAINT JOHN, N.B. ` Irving Pulp and Paper is planning to spend about $450 million to modernize a mill in Saint John, making the announcement a day after the New Brunswick government lifted a cap on the amount of softwood it will make available to the forestry industry from Crown land.





The company says work on its mill on the west side of the city is slated to begin this spring and will create the full-time equivalent of 600 jobs.

As a PM company and RE investor, I am excited by the many good things I see coming down the pipe (line) here in SJ. Our market has taken a beating over the last few years but it is on the rise.

In addition the Irving mill expansion, St. John also on the pipeline that just received "Direction Reversal" approval. Meaning a big potential of refinery job expansion.

Migration of young Nova Scotians predicted to continue





Economic trends compelling young Nova Scotians to move west for work won`t change any time soon, says the governor of the Bank of Canada.





`The migrations ` are a product of that two-speed economy that I mentioned,` Stephen Poloz said at a news conference Tuesday after addressing a Halifax Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

Pervasive spruce budworm en route to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick





TRURO, N.S. ` A pervasive pest is making its way to the Maritimes.





Nova Scotia`s Natural Resources Department says the spruce budworm has already ravaged a significant amount of Quebec forest and is now en route to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

PEI has highest job vacancy rate in the country





The latest figures from Statistics Canada show that for every vacant job in the month of December, there were 20 Islanders looking for work.





That was the highest job vacancy ratio in the country, and the highest P.E.I. has seen since Statistics Canada introduced the measure back in 2011.

Nova Scotia rate up with job losses





Nova Scotia`s unemployment rate edged up slightly between February and March as the economy shed about 3,400 mostly full-time jobs, according to seasonally adjusted figures released Friday by Statistics Canada.





The month-over-month unemployment rate went up to 9.3 for March from 8.9 per cent in February, countering the national trend that saw the unemployment rate dip to 6.9 per cent for a post 2008-09 recession low.
