As housing becomes pricier, Vancouverites are growing more sensitive about foreign influences, wanting to know what their politicians are doing to protect local interests. The answer, to date, is pretty much nothing. This, even as Australia’s prime minister has just announced plans to jail foreigners who purchase homes in contravention of that country’s stiff foreign investment rules on property purchases.

Why more Metro Vancouverites are complaining about bad smells

East Vancouver resident Blair Redlin and his neighbours are wary of inviting friends for a barbecue on a hot summer day. Those may be the days when West Coast Reduction, a nearby rendering plant, bathes their Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood in a smell so foul that eating from an outdoor grill is unthinkable.

Redlin, who has lived in his East Georgia Street house since 1991, says bad smells remain an ongoing, intermittent presence despite the company’s insistence that it’s getting better at controlling them.

Investors buy Burnaby apartment blocks

A wave of land speculators led by mainland Chinese buyers is snapping up old Burnaby rental apartment buildings, driving per door prices above $350,000 and razing the units for high-rise condominium construction. The land rush is centred around four transit-linked Burnaby town centres where at least three dozen apartment buildings have been bought for demolition in the past year. Unlike Vancouver, Burnaby has no restrictions on tearing down low-cost rental apartments and building condominiums in their place. Last year, the suburban city issued 419 demolition permits and are averaging 34 per month so far in 2015.

"They" say no to Hydro electricity, coal plants, LNG, Oil, wind turbines in their neighbourhood. What's next?

Having put all its efforts behind homegrown liquefied natural gas, while snubbing not-good-enough-for-us oil pipelines needed by Albertans, British Columbia is now in an uncomfortable situation.

As it turns out, LNG, the clean-burning fuel embraced by the Liberal government of Christy Clark, whose development was promoted up and down Asia and that was supposed to be acceptable to the province’s green/aboriginal/nimby cohort, is not good enough either.
