Toronto housing exodus good news for Hamilton





The Hamilton area will see a recovery in housing starts in 2015, along with strong re-sales of homes and more jobs, according to a report from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation.





Although single-family home construction declined in the region between 2011 and 2013, creating a lower inventory, CMHC says starts in the category will climb in 2014 and 2015.

K-W tenants group says rent-increase loophole traps seniors





KITCHENER ` A local tenants rights group says some seniors looking to downsize are selling their homes and moving into apartments without knowing about an important loophole: units built after 1991 are not subject to rent control.





"They move into these new buildings, they're tickled to death, and they don't know anything about the law," said Mary Pappert, a longtime executive member of Renters Educating and Networking Together (RENT), a regional volunteer group.

Carbon monoxide alarms are law in Ontario





Carbon monoxide detectors are now mandatory in Ontario homes.






The legislation went into effect Oct. 15, and with the end of daylight savings time this weekend, it`s a good time to remind people to buy a carbon monoxide detector, says deputy fire chief Jo Zambito.





`If your smoke detector is getting old, rather than replacing the batteries, it makes sense to buy a new unit that is also a carbon monoxide detector,` he says.
