OSHAWA -- The unemployment rate for the Oshawa area shot up to 8.7 per cent in June. The Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area, which includes Whitby and part of Clarington, saw rates increase from 7.9 per cent in May. It now surpasses the national unemployment rate, which edged up 0.2 percentage points from May to 8.6 per cent in June.

The Oshawa area unemployment rate in June 2008 was 7.3 per cent, according to Statistics Canada.

All of the rates are estimates based on a three-month moving average and are seasonally adjusted.

Employment in Canada peaked in October 2008. Since then, full-time losses of 454,000 jobs have been only partially offset by 84,000 jobs gained in part-time employment.
