VICTORIA — The B.C. government could give the green light to as much as $1 billion in infrastructure projects as early as next week, Community Development Minister Bill Bennett says.

The money will come from two federal funds: One holds the remaining federal stimulus dollars earmarked for B.C., and the other holds money meant specifically for communities.

The stimulus fund contains $382 million, and the communities component of the Building Canada Fund has between $52.5 million and $117.5 million available, Bennett said. Both funds must be matched by the province, meaning as much as much as $1 billion could soon be doled to projects across B.C.

The announcements should come as good news to many municipalities, which have collectively requested massive amounts of funding as part of the federal stimulus spending plan, and which are all eager to get started so they can meet the tight deadlines imposed by the federal government.

But Robert Hobson, president of the Union of B.C. Municipalities, says he`s worried because a dramatic provincial cash crunch could mean the province will not pass as much federal money onto municipalities, instead keeping more to fund its own projects.
