Poplar River an `ant hill of activity"

Things are buzzing in the Coronach area of southern Saskatchewan, as work proceeds on a $140 million retrofit of one of the two generating units at the nearby Poplar River Power Station.

The unit, which produced 300 megawatts of power, was shut down on March 1 and is expected to remain closed for 100 days as work proceeds to improve the units electrical generating capacity, reliability and efficiency.

Barry to be torn down; residents must move out

The prospective new owner of the Barry Hotel plans to rip down the aging building after taking possession on April 1.

"It`s in extremely rough shape. (Problems include) things like fire escapes and doors off the hinges . . . you name it," said Kelly Kehoe, real estate agent for Saskatoon veterinarian Dr. Tom Maltman, whose purchase offer has been accepted and signed by present owner Shoshana Goldstein.

"If you were going to keep it you`d have to have fairly deep pockets to fix this thing up and make something out of it," Kehoe added.

Let`s get moving on Lake Placid`s downtown project

The letter writers and opponents of anything commercial ending up on the sacred River Landing site may have to stop derisively making a "Calgary developer" reference when they heap scorn on the Lake Placid Group proposal.

Michael Lobsinger grew up in Saskatoon. Presumably, he didn`t just make up a resume that displays two degrees from the University of Saskatchewan. Indeed, in his Saskatoon public homecoming speech this week, the former boy from Munroe Avenue talked about his days at Holy Cross High School, where he fondly remembered Catholic educator James Mahoney (later a bishop) telling the young Lobsinger he wouldn`t amount to anything.

A growth in divorce numbers

Moose Jaw is a popular place — for divorce.
According to a 2006 Statistics Canada community profile, the city`s divorce rate, based on population, is seven per cent — two per cent higher than the provincial average of five.
"I`ve noticed a growth (in the number of divorces) over the last year, year and a half," said Drew Filyk, senior family practitioner at Merchant Law Group in Moose Jaw. "I think it`s tied to the increase in our real estate market."

Saskatchewan `the new Alberta,` analyst says

Saskatchewan may not have the Rocky Mountains, the C-Train or the world`s largest mall, but this province is "the new Alberta," according to an RBC report released today.

Growth in the housing sector and a related drop in home affordability form the basis of the claim, according to RBC`s assistant chief economist Derek Holt. Saskatchewan is expected to be the only province in 2008 to see an increase in housing starts over 2007, the report states.

Sask. oilpatch draws investment interest: Wall

REGINA -- Planned changes to the royalty regime in Alberta continue to fuel further investment interest in Saskatchewan`s oilpatch, Premier Brad Wall says.

Wall, in New York to promote the province`s energy potential, said he heard a "huge amount of interest" in Saskatchewan on the trip, partly due to what`s seen as undeveloped potential here but also because of the royalty changes in other jurisdictions.

Biofuels plant step closer to reality

Saskatchewan and the Birch Hills district, in particular, remains the first choice of Iogen Corp. to build a commercial scale ethanol-from-cellulose facility that will involve a capital investment of half a billion dollars.

The federal government`s lead agency that will allocate $500 million in funding announced a year ago for "next generation" biofuels has reached the "due diligence" stage in evaluating Iogen`s plans for a commercial facility.

Mortlach opens new developments

The Village of Mortlach has two new real estate developments.
Twenty-one new residential lots are under development and an Ontario trailer manufacturer will locate a plant in town.
"We`re negotiating with Flatboy Trailers for two five-acre lots and it wants an option on a third," said Mayor Ron Locke.
"It hopes to pour cement as soon as weather conditions allow. It`s looking at opening by summer."

City sells subdivision to private developer

It`s a first for Moose Jaw.
Council is pursuing a contract for the private development of over 600 new homes in Moose Jaw`s north end.
The West Park subdivision, located northwest of Ninth Avenue Northwest and Thatcher Drive is roughly 140 acres that Saskatoon`s DharmaDesign principal and development spokesman Derek Thompson said would likely contain about 650-700 units, roughly half of which are individual lots and the other half are town houses.
He said everyone involved with the project is very enthusiastic.
"The developers are really excited and think Moose Jaw has a lot of promise."
DharmaDesign is partnering with Montney Homes, both out of Saskatoon, in developing the project.

Beware of scams and frauds when investing

Are you doing everything you can to protect your good name and your money? Your own greed and "happy to help" attitude can make you vulnerable to the tricks of a smart con artist.

You can learn ways to protect yourself by reading a book called Stop Fraud by former Saskatoon police investigator, Brian Trainor. Based on his years of experience tracking down con artists, Trainor offers helpful tips.

In many good ways, Sask. is tops

You`ll need your big green foam hand, with the index finger pointed skyward, if you remember where you left it after the football game in November. Also, it wouldn`t hurt to warm up the vocal cords, for the "Whoop-whoop-whoop" and the "We`re Number 1."

Today, we swagger. If for no better reason than to burst into spring with renewed optimism, we take a look at some of the notable superlatives in the 103-year-old Saskatchewan experiment -- its biggests, its firsts and its mosts, not only of Canada, but of North America and the world.

Councillors approve new fire station

Thanks to a hefty return on investment from the City of Saskatoon`s land sales for new neighbourhoods, residents of the city`s east side will soon have a new fire station.

City council approved a $5.4-million capital project Monday night for construction of Fire Station No. 8 at the corner of Herold and Slimmon Roads in Lakewood.

Contractors build up home-based business list

The residential construction sector led Saskatoon`s new home-based businesses last year as the city issued 119 licences for the growing industry.

According to data from the 2007 annual report compiled by the City of Saskatoon`s development services branch, the construction sector added nearly 225 new businesses last year, up to 1,026 from 803 a year earlier.

No need for concern, Ipsco executive says

The president of Ipsco Inc. says Reginans shouldn`t be worried about the sale of the company`s Canadian assets, including the Regina steelworks and pipe facilities, to Evraz Group.

"People are going to be concerned when there`s a change like this," said John Tulloch, a long-time Ipsco executive who took over the reins at Ipsco following the retirement of former CEO David Sutherland last year.

City pays $1.2M for westside property, moves closer to massive redevelopment

Tenants of two rental houses on 20th Street West will have a new landlord next month - the City of Saskatoon.

On Monday night, city council approved a sale agreement seeing the city take ownership of five houses and a commercial property in the 1400 block of 20th Street West, with the long-term goal of clearing the block for construction of a highrise apartment building with street-level retail.

Sask. has second-highest increase

Saskatchewan posted the second-highest increase in inflation in the last 12 months, with a 3.4-per cent increase in the consumer price index (CPI) from February 2007 to February 2008.

Doug Elliott of SaskTrends Monitor said the main cause of the increase in inflation in the province is rising housing costs.
