When the tree business falls

SASKATOON -- With the closure of several Saskatchewan soft and hardwood mills, including the Prince Albert Pulp and Paper Mill, hundreds of people are out of work and the forest industry in Saskatchewan is in a holding pattern. But the closures have also had a ripple effect on other forestry companies, such as Smokey Lake Treeplanters, a reforestation company.

Conversion means residents ousted

SASKATOON -- Residents of a downtown apartment building connected to the Sheraton Cavalier hotel have been told to start looking for new homes, as the building`s owner prepares to convert their suites into hotel rooms for out-of-town guests.

The occupants of 37 rental apartments in the Cavalier Tower on Spadina Crescent received notice of the conversion plan last week, confirmed Paul Leier, CEO of Cavalier Enterprises, which owns the building and hotel.

Denver-Saskatoon route takes flight

Twice-daily flights between Saskatoon and Denver, Colo., will serve as a lifeline between Saskatchewan`s largest city, the west-central United States and a world of connecting flights, a Canadian consul general said Tuesday.

"It`s a great connection both in business and in tourist terms," said Dale Eisler, a Denver-based Canadian consul general who serves Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Montana.

HTC deal should benefit U of R projects

A Regina-based company has signed a licensing agreement with a Korean boiler manufacturer that will make carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology developed at the University of Regina commercially available to the world power generation market.

The deal, signed Wednesday in Seoul, will also see Doosan Babcock Energy of the U.K. and Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction of South Korea invest $10 million for a 15-per-cent stake in HTC Purenergy.

Condo towers proposed for Market Mall site

Market Mall plans to add a pair of condo towers at least 18 storeys high, becoming the first Saskatoon mall to go residential.

The towers combined will have at least 300 condos, said mall general manager Greg Dionne. They will be built, pending approval by city hall, about 30 metres apart on the parking lot near Zellers.

"If you`re a senior, you wouldn`t need your vehicle because we have everything you need under one roof," Dionne said.

Regina no longer in a `frenzied sellers` market`

Home sales slowed and average prices levelled off in August in Regina due to an increase in listings coming onto the market, according to the Association of Regina Realtors Inc.

There were 254 residential sales during the month through the Multiple Listing Service (MLS), down 36 per cent from the record-setting 397 sales recorded in August 2007. Monthly sales were slightly below the 10-year average of 267 sales for the month.

Building permits still on record pace

Building permits in Regina totalled $226 million to the end of August, down from last year`s record pace of $254 million for the first eight months of 2007.

But with construction of the first phase of the $180-million revitalization of IPSCO Inc. now underway, 2008 could displace 2007 as the record year for building permits in the city.

Grocery store touted for downtown

Downtown`s four-year search for a grocery store may end with the King George construction project.

Meridian Development Corp. is talking with a local group that wants to develop a "high-end, whole Earth" grocery in the style of Capers Community Markets in Vancouver. Capers stocks natural and organic foods.

Saskatoon has the smarts: survey

Saskatoon has bragging rights for smarts in Saskatchewan, but Regina ranks ahead in culture, says a national survey.

"I guess we have a higher learning level in Saskatoon than we find in other cities. Oh man, that`s going to get me in trouble," said a laughing Tourism Saskatoon president and CEO Todd Brandt.

"Maybe the air`s a little cleaner, a little fresher here and we grow up a little smarter in this city."

Job numbers jump by 15,100

The pace of job growth in Saskatchewan cranked up to a higher gear in August as the number of people employed increased by 15,100 jobs.

"This is a huge jump,`` said Doug Elliott, an independent observer who publishes the Sask Trends Monitor newsletter.

Elliott has expressed concern in recent months that the pace of job growth in the province was slowing somewhat.

Tory sweep in Sask. expected

A new national poll suggests the Conservatives could be headed towards another near-sweep of Saskatchewan in an anticipated fall election.

According to an Ipsos Reid poll commissioned by the Canwest News Service, 53 per cent of Saskatchewan respondents said they would be voting for the current governing party in a federal election expected to be held in October.

Thirty per cent of provincial respondents said they would vote for the Liberal party while 13 per cent plan to vote for the NDP.

Developer learns female-friendly tricks

Texas retail real estate developer Terry Montesi had his "aha!" moment a few years ago, while reading a book called Trends.

In it, authors Marti Barletta and Tom Peters argue retailers needed to wake up to the fact that women are responsible for about 80 per cent of all consumer purchases.

Montesi, who, as CEO of Trademark Property, had helped create a number of mixed-use developments, suddenly realized the female perspective was all but absent from the planning process for his projects.

Harper vows to sustain Saskatchewan`s growth

Prime Minister Stephen Harper was the main event at a campaign rally on a farm just southeast of Regina, located in the only Saskatchewan riding not currently held by the Conservatives.

"You are building a great success story here in Saskatchewan. We will stay the course, we`ll keep growing and we`re going to protect this province`s gains and move it forward even better into the future," Harper told the crowd of roughly 300 people who packed a quonset for the rally on Monday evening.

Building permits in the province totalled $297.9 million in July, the highest value of permits issued in Saskatchewan since figures were first recorded in 1956, according to Statistics Canada.

Saskatchewan`s building permits jumped by 89 per cent over July of last year, well above the 5.7 per cent increase recorded nationally.

PanTerra prepares for fall drilling

PanTerra Resource Corp. has announced preparations for a fall field program in Saskatchewan.

After several months of reservoir and engineering evaluations, the Calgary-based company says funds raised earlier this year will be put toward the field program this autumn. The program will include well completions, fracture simulations, drilling, coring and geophysical work. PanTerra`s three exploration permits in Saskatchewan cover nearly 1.1 million acres.

Property tax relief will wait

It`s unlikely there will be any new property tax relief measures this fall and there are no guarantees the Saskatchewan Party`s long-term solution for high education property taxes will make it into next spring`s budget, says the MLA tasked to report on the issue.

Rosetown-Elrose MLA Jim Reiter said Tuesday there are still consultations taking place but he still hopes to deliver his report to Education Minister Ken Krawetz by January, if not sooner.
