I often get asked, "How did you get into real estate investing?" Here is my story.

As a young kid I had posters of sport cars and my favorite was always the Lamborghini Countach. The only way I knew how to get one was to ask Santa, and when I didn't get it on Christmas I was disappointed. I didn't do much about it until a few yrs later. When I graduated high school I went on to take Instrumentation at NAIT. 2 yrs later I finished and began my career in the oil industry. Shortly after I began thinking of ways to buy that Lamborghini I always wanted. I thought if I save up my corporate earnings, it would take a lifetime to save $100,000 so I could make the purchase. Some colleagues of mine were buying homes to live in and it got me thinking. What if I buy a place and in 25 yrs it would be paid off and I could sell it and buy that Lamborghini I had wanted since I was a kid. Knowing not much more, I went ahead and began searching for a 2-bedroom condo to buy and move into. Prices to me were extremely high because I had no idea what real estate was worth. In 2003, on my 21st birthday, I signed the papers to a 2-bedroom condo in downtown Edmonton for $137500. I had a 25 yr amortized mortgage and my thoughts were 25 yrs from that date I was going to sell it for $137500 and buy that car I always dreamed of. Not really knowing what I was doing, I began in real estate investing.

I had no idea that real estate could appreciate over time or any knowledge of the power real estate could have. My goals and dreams have changed since then and I've updated and modified my plans along the way. I still aspire to have that sports car one day, but the way I've set out to achieve that goal has changed dramatically.
