Beginning Monday, a new LRT station in the city`s northwest quadrant will begin moving up to 10,000 passengers every workday.

The long-awaited unveiling of the Crowfoot C-Train station happened Saturday, introducing a few thousands Calgarians to the newest LRT extension in the northwest since 2003.

Located at Crowchild Trail and Nose Hill Drive, the new station has a unique, open design that allows for clear views into the structure.

Mayor Dave Bronconnier said the project--which cost $205 million --is an example of the kind of investment that needs to be made in civic infrastructure at this time.

"Some have criticized it (saying) it`s actually too nice, but this project actually came in $20 million under budget," Bronconnier said.

"I`m actually an advocate for advancing construction of projects like the LRT. It creates jobs, it creates a stimulus. There isn`t a better time in the last decade in terms of investing into infrastructure."

Area residents have been waiting for the extension since 2005, when city council approved the project.

The Crowfoot extension also includes improvements to both the LRT system and the transportation corridor. Crowchild Trail now has greater capacity, having been widened from four to six lanes.

Portions of the roadway are lower than their original elevation by five metres to accommodate new vehicle and pedestrian bridges.
