Labour war brewing in Alberta

Booming luxury market pushes Calgary house prices to record highs





CALGARY - A booming luxury market has pushed Calgary house prices to unprecedented levels.








Average sale and median prices hit all-time records for the city in 2013 for both total MLS transactions and in the single-family home category, according to preliminary unofficial data from the Calgary Real Estate Board.

Calgary downtown office vacancy rate on the rise





CALGARY - Calgary`s overall downtown office vacancy rate nearly doubled in the past year, according to new data from commercial real estate firm CBRE Limited.








A report, by the company, said the city`s vacancy rate in the downtown area jumped to 9.1 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2013, up from 5.0 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Calgary MLS listings significantly down from last year





CALGARY - The single-family home inventory of 1,515 MLS listings is the lowest level to begin a year since 2006 and it`s the second fewest active listings in a decade to begin a year, says a Calgary realtor.








According to research by Mike Fotiou, associate broker with First Place Realty, there were 2,236 active listings in the city`s overall real estate market to begin the month of January, down 17.9 per cent from a year ago.

Record annual sales for Alberta new cars and trucks





CALGARY - A buoyant economy led to a likely new record for annual sales for Alberta new cars and trucks in 2013.








According to the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association, for the first 11 months of the year, Alberta year-over-year sales growth was 7.2 per cent and tracking for a new record of more than 256,000 units sold.

Factors combined to boost Calgary real estate market in 2013





Calgary`s housing market grew twice as fast as expected in 2013, the result of what some realtors have dubbed a `perfect storm` of market factors.








Calgary Real Estate Board president Becky Walters said it`s unlikely 2014 will see the same kind of growth witnessed this year, when a combination of the June flood, a tight rental market, and an influx of newcomers to the city drove sales and prices higher.

Energy Hub Hardisty enjoying boom





HARDISTY ` This is the place, the tiny speck on the Alberta map made famous by a pipeline that might never get built ` the controversial Keystone XL.








And that`s a little odd, because a handful of pipelines already feed oil into and out of more than 70 massive storage tanks on the hill near here. It cost billions to build that tank farm and the black gold it stores is worth even more. Keystone XL would only join that party, not start it.

Report looks at whether oil-by-rail is a viable option





A task force report has been handed in to the British Columbia and Alberta governments that examines the idea of transporting oilsands' crude via rail if proposed pipelines don't get the green light, government documents show.








It's an idea the environmental group ForestEthics calls "underhanded."

Oil prices seen sliding as supplies rise





EDMONTON - While Alberta`s oil production continues to grow, the value of much of that oil may decline along with that of crudes from other nations, Deloitte said in a forecast released Friday.








And natural gas, which was once Alberta`s biggest source of resource revenue, will remain as a low-priced commodity until after 2020, Deloitte said.

New Year will bring big decisions concerning the future of Canada's oilsands





OTTAWA ` The National Energy Board`s conditional approval of the Northern Gateway pipeline is just one of three major policy decisions expected over the coming months that will have huge implications on the federal government`s plans to diversify Canada`s energy export markets and ship oilsands crude abroad.





The Conservative government, energy industry and environmental groups are still anxiously awaiting the final U.S. environmental impact statement and decision from the Obama administration on the Keystone XL oilsands pipeline, as well as a European Union vote on the Fuel Quality Directive ` decisions expected in the coming weeks and months.

Cautious Deloitte forecast calls for lower oil, flat natural gas prices





CALGARY - A new forecast by Deloitte paints a bearish picture for energy prices, with oil expected to dip and natural gas to stay relatively flat.








The financial services firm predicts West Texas Intermediate prices will be US$95 per barrel for 2014, dropping to US$90 the following year and US$85 by 2018.

City of Edmonton in negotiations with Oilers owner for new skyscraper





EDMONTON - The city is working on a deal to consolidate many of its workers in a new downtown office tower the Katz Group would build in the arena district, the Edmonton Journal has learned.








The structure would be constructed at the southwest corner of 101st Street and 104th Avenue, site of the former Staples store, which closed last summer.

Annual report forecasts Edmonton housing growth





Edmonton ` The REALTORS Association of Edmonton is predicting steady growth in the housing market for 2014.








In its annual housing forecast, the association forecasts MLS sales will increase by about three per cent for the year.

Condos and homes outside of the City of Edmonton expected to be biggest sellers in 2014





EDMONTON - While sales of single-family homes in Edmonton will plateau in 2014, sales of homes outside the city and condos will see growth, according to the annual housing forecast by the Realtors Association of Edmonton released Wednesday.





The value of total Multiple Listing Service sales in 2014 will increase by about three per cent over $8 billion in 2013, based on higher sales and prices, said association president Greg Steele.
