Investing in the US - Estate Implications

Hello, I'm looking at making an investment purchase in Florida real estate. The property is looking like a very good deal, but this will be my first US investment. I know that I read something in the past on estate implications of owning US property where Uncle Sam will want a part of your...

    Thoughts on Occupy Wall Street

A couple of comments: 1. The protests in the US may have some legitamacy and serve as a counter weight to the Tea Party there. However, the protests in Canada seem more like a "Me Too" movement for professional protest class. 2. The irony of the protests is if you include the entire 7...

    Rent to Own

I have never understood the rent to own concept. I look at it and think if I want to sell a home why not just sell it today? And if I'm going to hold it why commit to selling at today's prices 3 or 5 years from now? Is the idea to look at it as a rental property that you can charge more rent...

Tell me the Canadian people are smarter than this

The rise of the NDP in this election is another example of style over substance. The media plays to much attention to the style of the leader and doesn't analysis and hold the leaders to account for the impacts party's platform. In any event make sure you get out and vote today.

    MLS Search by Lot Size??

Every MLS system is different but searching by lot size isn't a flexible option. I have only ever seen a lot size search done by acres and the smallest category is 0-5 acres and it goes up from there. I doubt that it's a useful function for a house search.

    Judicial Properties

I've never heard the term Judicial Sell before but I'll assume that they are similar to to bank owned or foreclosed properities. Do not think that you are going to be getting a great deal on these types of properities the rules are different in Canada than the US, were the US banks just try to...

    Certifying cheques

As the other poster stated the only place to certify a cheque is at the home branch of the person who issued the cheque to you. In most cases I doubt that they would attempt to contact the person who issued the cheque when you certify it, after all you'll be paying the bank a fee to certify the...

Why Real Estate is so POWERFUL – Attempt at explaining it

That is a great way to tell a story. The pictures really add to the emotional impact of what you are trying to tell. I have been inspired to try to adopt a simliar approach in the future.

Are we next ? Is Canada living beyond its means too ?

I agree that government jobs pay far too much and their benefits are excessive. However this is not a problem unique to Canada nor is it a new problem. I also agree that Canada has been lucky to end up in the right spot between the US & Euro systems. The problems I see facing Canada now is...

    securities commission

I believe the securities commission only concerns themselves with publicly traded securities. The OSC is suppost to enforce the Securities Act (Ontario), so a quick read of that might answer your specific question. I do not think the OSC would care if you and a few friends form a LP or JV...

    Variable or Fixed

The break even point on this choice will be determined when interest rates rise and the variable rate is great than today's 5 year fixed. So you have 115 points in room before today's fixed term rate starts to look better. Personally, I think that the Bank of Canada wants to raise interest...
