Next spike in gas prices could be permanent, CIBC warns

TORONTO

A perfect storm of waning supplies coupled with a bad hurricane season could send gasoline prices higher again for good -- to perhaps as high as $1.75 per litre, says an economist with CIBC.

In past years when hurricanes have torn through the Gulf of Mexico, people braced for the inevitable price spike, expecting that in due course it`ll recover as battered oil rigs limp back on line.

That`s no longer a reasonable expectation, CIBC`s Jeff Rubin said yesterday in a report.

Northwest Territories may seek private-sector help building highway

INUVIK, N.W.T.

No longer content to wait for federal largesse to build what it considers a crucial road link, the Northwest Territories government is considering turning to the private sector to help complete the Mackenzie Valley Highway.

It would be a $700-million, 800-kilometre ribbon of asphalt that would directly link Canada`s northern coast to the south for the first time.

"We`re looking at . . . potential P3 (public-private partnership) proposals to see if there`s any interest in moving forward with the Mackenzie Valley Highway,`` said N.W.T. Premier Floyd Roland.
