Bulging neighbourhoods push wards` boundaries

SASKATOON -- Saskatoon`s growth in the east is forcing a rejigging of civic ward boundaries that could see two more wards straddling the river.

Wards 10 (east of the river and Circle Drive and north of College Drive) and 9 (east of Circle and south of Eighth Street) grew so fast according to the 2006 census that they`re each more than 10 per cent larger than the average ward size.

Wards 5 (the northern tip of the city including Lawson Heights, the airport area, industrial areas and Silverwood Heights) and 2 (core neighbourhoods plus Montgomery Place) dropped to more than 10 per cent below the average.

Beware of fake Revenue letter

How would you react if you received the following letter from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)?

"Dear ___

"Our records indicate insufficient information for your income tax return. As a result, you have been exempt from Canadian Tax reporting and withholdings on claims to be paid to you.

"To apply for your claims, we have been required by law to update our records in order to rectify your exemption status."

The letter then goes on to ask you to complete a T2 form, which asks for such personal information as where you bank (including the address of the bank and your account number), your social insurance number, your profession or occupation and even a copy of your passport.

For those of you who would choose to ignore this letter from the tax authorities, you would be saving yourself a lot of grief since the letter is, in fact, part of a mail scam that has been identified by the CRA.

Sask. ripe for potash expansion, report says

The race is on to develop a new greenfield mine in Saskatchewan, says a report on global potash supply.

"Saskatchewan is likely where we will see the majority of greenfield potash expansions given that it has the world`s richest and largest potash deposits and the most stable political environment in the potash industry," states the 70-page CIBC World Markets report, entitled Global Potash Supply -- A Focus on Saskatchewan Exploration.

Possible twister wreaks havoc in north Sask.

SASKATOON -- There`s no place like home for Wendy Vermette.

That`s because the family house is one of the only buildings left standing after a possible tornado ripped apart much of Vermette`s business Tuesday afternoon.

"Three buildings are completely demolished. There`s nothing left at all," she said. "There`s stuff all over the yards."

Construction resumes to chagrin of Friends

Construction resumed this week at a controversial project at Lac Pelletier in southwest Saskatchewan, as opponents of the development attempt to mount a last-ditch legal challenge to the 45-lot subdivision.

Preparation work began Monday after a two-and-a-half-month hiatus on the project, which was halted in May after complaints about lack of consultation by local cottagers.

Members of the Friends of Lac Pelletier Committee, who have raised concerns about the environmental impact of the project, tried to slow construction at the site, about 43 kilometres, southwest of Swift Current.

Effective Sunday, Saskatoon Transit will realign routes 11 and 12 and add a new Route 23 to serve Hampton Village and Blairmore.

Changes to Route 11 will be implemented to provide 15-minute service to and from the downtown terminal and the Broadway area. The schedule will provide more direct connections on 33rd Street to and from the west side of Saskatoon and the Airport Industrial Area.

EI drop sign of tight labour market

The number of people collecting Employment Insurance (EI) in Saskatoon is down, but it could be a mixed blessing, says an observer of economic trends in Saskatchewan.

Statistics Canada has reported there were 30.4 per cent fewer people receiving EI in Saskatoon in June 2007 from June 2008. For Saskatchewan as a whole, the decrease was 17.5 per cent during the same period.

The numbers suggest more people were working but fewer people are available to work, Doug Elliott, publisher of Sask Trends Monitor newsletter, said Tuesday.

Diamond school still planned for downtown

Johannesburg, Antwerp, Tel Aviv ... Prince Albert?

If South African-expat Mike Botha has his way, we might yet be added to the list of cities known for their diamond-cutters.

Botha`s company, Embee Diamond Technologies, is in the process of buying the former ScotiaBank building on Central Avenue. Botha, in partnership with the Muskoday First Nation, plans to open up the Canadian Diamond Academy in the building, with a processing facility to follow.

Pay quickly rising in Sask.

Saskatchewan employers are hiring workers at a faster pace than employers in any other province, according to a Statistics Canada report released Wednesday.

The report also indicated Saskatchewan workers enjoyed the second highest rate of increases in weekly pay (3.7 per cent) in a comparison of June of this year with June, 2007.

Yet another report, released Wednesday by a private consulting company (The Hay Group) suggests the good times in Saskatchewan are likely to continue, with wage increases in 2009 forecasted to be 5.1 per cent, which would be the highest in the nation and well above the projected national average of 3.7 per cent.

Sask. not hit as hard as rest of country

The high Canadian dollar and sky-high fuel costs are hurting the tourism industry across Canada, and Saskatchewan is no exception.

But the province has weathered the storm better than most, partly because it doesn`t rely as heavily on U.S. travellers as Ontario and other tourist destinations.

Direct entries into the province during the first six months were down 6.4 per cent, according to indicators compiled by Tourism Saskatchewan, the province`s tourism promotion and development agency.

Sask. has third-best market

Saskatchewan has the third-best performing labour market in Canada, with low rates of unemployment and strong job growth, according to the Fraser Institute in a report released Thursday.

The Vancouver-based institute said Alberta had the best-performing labour market in North America, while B.C. ranked second in Canada followed by Saskatchewan.

More people have a fool for their client

Provincial courthouses are seeing more and more "Matlocks" these days, as the number of people who represent themselves in court cases keeps increasing.

At least that`s what some of those in the law profession are saying, based on their own anecdotal evidence. In the June edition of the Canadian Bar Association`s monthly magazine, the editor wrote that "the cost of retaining our services makes us largely inaccessible to all but the rich and the very poor" and that "there`s reason to believe that lawyers will not be an essential part of the legal system in the future."

City to take over park

Saskatoon - City council is poised to rubber stamp a deal with Maple Leaf Foods that will see taxpayers take over ownership -- and the maintenance costs -- of Fred Mitchell Memorial Gardens, formerly known as Labatt Gardens. Although the land transfer proposed by the company earlier this year has not yet been approved, city workers have already taken over the park`s upkeep, city manager Phil Richards said in an interview Thursday.

Richards said he doesn`t know how much annual tax revenue the city will lose if council approves the deal Monday. The future financial implications of the transfer are not laid out in a report to council recommending it be approved.

Price gains lead nation

Despite an 11-per-cent dip in the number of homes sold, Saskatchewan saw the dollar volume of home sales increase by 21 per cent and the average price jump by 36 per cent in the first seven months of 2008, compared with the same period last year.

According to Canadian Real Estate Association numbers released Friday, Saskatchewan saw average prices increase to $226,199 from $166,016 during the same period in 2007.

Listings increased by 41.4 per cent in the first seven months, the largest increase in the country.

JNR Resources Inc. reported this week project operator Uranium Power Corp. finished drilling on its South Fork project in southwest Saskatchewan.

The project focused on rock formations anticipated to contain a type of uranium deposit found in sandstone and conglomerates, called roll-front uranium deposits.
