Harper export bombshell leaves oilpatch puzzled

Oilpatch insiders are taking a wait-and-see approach to Prime Minister Stephen Harper`s bombshell announcement his government would move to restrict bitumen and oilsands exports to countries that don`t limit greenhouse gases.

During an election stop-over in Calgary on Friday, Harper said a re-elected Conservative government would prohibit bitumen exports to countries that don`t have emission reduction targets equivalent to Canada`s.

Jasper Place gets `chance of a lifetime`

The City of Edmonton needs to flesh out its Jasper Place revitalization strategy, and it`s calling on the community to draw up a plan.

An open house will be held Wednesday at 10043 151 St. to recruit residents for three separate committees.

West Jasper Place resident Irene Blain, who was on the project`s initial steering committee, acknowledges that many of her fellow community members lead busy lives but urges them to take the time to join in the process.

Due diligence reduces risks

Every business owner knows insurance is a fundamental part of doing business.

What many may not know are the omissions that can blindside you if you don`t do your due diligence when shopping for business insurance.

Think of the whole process of insurance as hiring a risk manager, says Harry Binks, president of Binks Insurance in Ottawa.

Ramsay residents say they can no longer stand the smell and it`s past time for Lilydale`s chicken plant to cross the road

On one side, the chickens.

On the other, ruffled feathers.

It is perhaps Calgary`s oldest ongoing dispute between a neighbourhood and an industrial neighbour, and now it looks like the fight between Ramsay and the Lilydale poultry plant might end up in court. "Legal action may be necessary -- there`s certainly interest in looking at that path," said Michael Benoit, spokesman for the Ramsay Community Association.

Premier holds fire on bitumen exports

EDMONTON - Premier Ed Stelmach said Monday he will wait until after the federal election before talking to Prime Minister Stephen Harper about his pledge to limit the export of Alberta bitumen.

Harper said last week he would stop the export of raw bitumen to countries with lower greenhouse gas emission standards than Canada.

U of C students study housing needs

In an attempt to deal with the lack of affordable student housing, the University of Calgary students` union is undertaking a study to determine what`s needed to solve the problem.

The report, expected by the end of January, will make a series of recommendations on how to best address the lack of student housing in Calgary.

"It`s not just residences," Dalmy Baez, president of the U of C

U of C students study housing needs

I guess the keyword is `Affordable`. We have listed a shared apartment in Dalhousie for $625 including all utilities (high speed internet/cable/ heating/ water and electric. The place is between shopping centres and nearly adjacent to a LRT station. Guess what - virtually no student responses. I guess they try to look for 3 or 4 room mates in a house and rent below $500/month otherwise they prefer to stay home. Can`t say I blame them.

But the U of C info from my experience (we advertised right on campus and on their website) is not correct.

Crisis could hit renters

Renting a home in Calgary may become more expensive as the credit squeeze tightens its grip on the global financial system, despite the fact the vacancy rate has gradually climbed from record lows reached last year.

Stuart Pocock, a broker with CMAC Mortgages, said the mortgage market in Calgary has become noticeably more tight. The credit crisis, which hit a hurdle yesterday after U.S. lawmakers rejected a $700-billion bailout plan for beleaguered banks, is making financial institutions across North America more reluctant to lend.
