Celebrity contractor Mike Holmes was on TV rescuing another homeowner from shoddy construction, when Tom Erickson had an idea.

Why not step in and make things right for the homeowner before renovations go wrong?

His idea has become his company, Quality Control Home Inspections and Renovation Watch Dogs.

"I was just thinking to myself that there`s a lot of things in place for the after-work part of things when people do the work and things get screwed up and somebody comes in and fixes it," Erickson said.

"But there are really no preventive measures to prevent the work from getting that way in the first place."

Erickson, a former flooring installer and site superintendent, helped build houses for eight years.

Now, Erickson lets others do the building while he keeps an eye on the work.

On his first visit he`ll go over renovation plans with the homeowner and discuss the feasibility of the project and possible pitfalls.
