The global slump is dividing Canada`s economy into haves and have-nots.

The services sector, boosted by strength in domestic spending, is stabilizing. But manufacturers, which depend on international demand for their goods and resources, continue to be rocked by the economic downturn.

All sectors of the economy were hit at the end of last year and early this year. In recent months, sectors not directly exposed to the global turmoil have found more solid footing.

Yet industries exposed to global recessionary forces are still in desperate shape.

Sectors such as base metal mining, aluminum production and auto and aerospace manufacturing are key drivers of economic activity. Mining is critical to many of Canada`s northern regions while manufacturing remains the lifeblood of the industrial corridors of Ontario and Quebec.
