South Fraser Perimeter Road opens





The South Fraser Perimeter Road is now open fully open, providing a major new route that improves traffic flow or truckers and other motorists South of the Fraser.








The new four-lane Highway 17 (the former Highway 17 to Tsawwassen is renamed Highway 17A) connects Deltaport to Highway 1 at 176 Street, with links to all five major crossings of the Fraser River from the Massey Tunnel to the Golden Ears Bridge.

BC coal town hopes for revival





Inside the Dinosaur Discovery Gallery in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., a set of two large doors symbolize past pain and future optimism for the coal industry in northeastern British Columbia and the region`s ties to Asia.








After years in storage, the doors finally went on display this past summer, with the entrance handles together forming the Quintette coal project`s logo. The Quintette mine opened in 1982 and supplied Japanese steel mills, but it closed in 2000 amid low coal prices

Laneway houses 'very popular' in Vancouver





Demand for laneway housing does not appear to have dwindled in 2013, as the City of Vancouver says it issued 348 laneway permits last year, just shy of the 2012 record of 350 permits.








Vancouver Coun. Geoff Meggs said the permits have been issued in neighbourhoods across the city, not just in a single area, providing a solution to some of the city`s affordability issues.

Vancouver touts an all-time record of approval for new rental units





As the city touts an all-time record of approval for new rental units this year, one Vancouver councillor is questioning why this is how taxpayer dollars are spent.








According to a statement released from the Office of the Mayor, Vancouver ` formerly a city with one of Canada`s lowest rental vacancy rates ` approved a record-high 1,097 rental units in 2013, bypassing last year`s record of 1,021 new units.

Dawson Creek hotel owners not sweet on suites





A Dawson Creek hotel owner wants property owners who rent out "in-suites," duplex owners, and apartment building owners to pay a commercial property tax rate "in an effort to level the playing field between all accommodation providers."








The move was part of an attempt to change how the city regulates property owners who rent rooms.
