The City Centre Airport will be closed in stages beginning as early as next year, but exactly when the last flight will take off must still be decided.

City council voted 10 to three on Wednesday to begin a phased closing of the airport. Councillors Tony Caterina, Ron Hayter and Linda Sloan voted against the motion.

They appeared blindsided and upset by a final-hour proposal some had touted as a "compromise" solution.

According to the motion, the Edmonton Regional Airport Authority is to immediately begin work on closing one of the airport`s two runways, runway 16-34, which runs north-south. It is believed that could happen in early 2010, once improvements are made to the other runway.

Negotiations are to begin immediately with NAIT about expanding on land freed by the runway closure, and the transportation department must draft new plans for the NAIT LRT station by September.

Medevac services will continue at the downtown airport until plans can be finalized to accommodate the flights elsewhere.
