The future of downtown Halifax

Sixty years ago, downtown was the place to be, wherever you lived.

Everything was there: bars, restaurants, retailers and banks. In Halifax, that included Barrington Street and Gottingen. Now, you`ve got your churches, NGO offices, a few cafes and pizza joints and the odd chotchkie dealer. Smack in the middle you`ve got the notorious Cogswell Interchange, the dismantling of which is oft-discussed, yet there it stands.

Top 10 owners of downtown Halifax by area and value

This week, we mapped the private and public entities that own downtown Halifax, and profiled six of the major private owners. The six weren`t chosen for any one reason`they were picked for their combination of strategy, wealth, number of properties and land area. Think Monopoly.

But owning most of the banking district like Michael Veit and Edgar Reifer do, or an island-selling business like Farhad Vladi, doesn't necessarily mean your properties are worth the most money.

We crunched the numbers and, as indicated by our heat map in Tuesday's story, if holding valuable real estate is your goal, you`re better off owning Scotia Square or the Maritime Centre (a.k.a. the Aliant Building).

New Halifax convention centre will soon break ground

Construction of the new World Trade and Convention Centre in downtown Halifax is set to begin within weeks, once all the documents are signed.

Contract negotiations on the convention centre lease between the provincial government and the developer, Rank Inc., were finalized recently and received cabinet approval Thursday, a government source said.

Halifax regional council is slated to deal Tuesday with a `memorandum of agreement` spelling out operational funding and how the new World Trade and Convention Centre will be managed.

Expect quick start for Halifax's convention centre project

The new Halifax convention centre is going to be built despite vocal opposition.

Now that city council has approved a management deal with the province, the official signing of the 25-year lease with private developer Rank Inc. is expected soon.

In fact, the lease signing could happen Thursday when all three governments and Rank will be on hand for a news conference at Neptune Theatre, near the proposed convention centre site.

'Starting gun' goes off on shipbuilding in Halifax

A preliminary deal with Irving Shipbuilding Inc. will result in no new jobs but is an `important step` in the overall federal shipbuilding procurement strategy, officials said Tuesday.

The $9.3-million contract, unveiled at a Halifax Shipyard news briefing Tuesday morning, will mean that Irving will conduct preparatory work that includes a review of the design and specifications of the existing fleet of Arctic offshore patrol ships and complete an execution strategy on the new patrol ships project.

Hot Halifax housing market sees prices on the rise

For those looking to buy or sell homes in HRM, now is a great time to do it, analysts say.

With bright employment prospects and low interest rates driving up housing prices, the market in Halifax continues a steady rise, an increase of more than five per cent from the second quarter in 2011.

That increase is also slightly above the national average, according to the Royal LePage House Price Survey and Market Survey Forecast report issued on Tuesday.

5 'real world' signs of the coming Chinese apocalypse

From shrinking trade to stalling factories to surprise rate cuts, signs are mounting that China is headed for a hard landing.

Tuesday investors fretted as China`s imports in June grew at half the expected pace, entrenching concerns that domestic demand in the world`s second-largest economy is cooling quickly.

The news was also not a good harbinger for China first-half GDP data to be released later this week.

BMO: Hot Halifax market could be sunk by stalled population growth

A new report examining Halifax`s economy paints a portrait of a city with surging employment, a flourishing private sector and a red-hot housing market.

But reconciling a massive job boom with sputtering population growth threatens to take the wind out of Halifax`s sails.

The BMO Capital Markets report, titled Halifax: Growth in its Sails, forecasts that the city`s unemployment rate will drop to four per cent by 2016, from its rate in June of 6.8 per cent.

Deep Panuke back in production by the end of summer

The Deep Panuke offshore field is expected to be producing 300 million cubic feet of gas daily later this year when it reaches full production, says the president of the company operating the field.

Encana Corp. president and chief executive officer Randy Eresman made the comment during a conference call with investment analysts Wednesday after his struggling company reported a $1.5-billion second-quarter loss.

Encana officials say production is still slated to start later this summer at the Deep Panuke field, about 250 kilometres southwest of Halifax, even though Eresman said the energy giant is moving its focus away from natural gas to natural gas liquids production due to slumping global gas prices.
