KITCHENER

Here`s an easy way to win a bet in a bar. Ask someone what Waterloo Region technology company has Jim Balsillie as chair and co-founder.

No, not Research In Motion; Balsillie joined RIM eight years into its existence and stepped down as chair last year.

Extension of rail line into York expected to boost house values, real estate study suggests

Live near a transit station? Cha-ching.

That`s the message out of a new study commissioned by the Real Estate Investment Network, entitled the GTA Transportation Effect, that suggests upcoming transit improvements such as bringing the subway up Yonge Street to Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill will be a major driver in population growth and home prices.

The study`s author, Don Campbell, said it`s not all that surprising people are really starting to move closer to public transit options.

Bylaw battle or side entrance tussle?

A real estate company wants to open the side entrance to its Unionville Main Street office. But a bylaw — and a trio of community groups — stand in the way, so it all comes down to a face-off at Tuesday`s Markham council meeting.

Unionville Village merchants and residents fear changing a 20-year old bylaw, which prohibits offices, banks and fast food outlets from the ground floor of any main street property, could transform Main Street into lean, if not mean, street.

Parkview residents getting traffic light
Whitechurch-Stouffville

Seniors won`t have to dodge traffic when crossing Weldon Road from Parkview Village to Sobeys anymore, thanks to a traffic light to be installed this year.

The decision was made at Tuesday`s Whitchurch-Stouffville council meeting. It went against a staff recommendation to wait until a fire hall and arena are built in the neighbourhood before doing another pedestrian crossing review.
