I fail to see how this is no longer rascist in your view. Clearly there is still a Spaniard and a Greek (mayor of the Spanish and Greek towns.... How many Americans, Canadians, French etc would be mayors in a Spanish or Greek town???) It is also insinuating that mayors are dishonest. Clearly someone would take offense!!



I however thought this was a good joke too. I have a sense of humor.



I also believe that how we react (ie get offended or not) is a choice. I choose to be offended, or I choose not to be offended. Therefore the blame should be on me if I get offended, not the joke teller! With 7 billion plus people, I am bound to offend someone with.... my political views, my religious views, my eating habits, my etiquette (or lack thereof), my sense of humor etc., etc.

I would like to add to all of you that have something negative to say about this joke--



There are far more important things in life to worry about than trying to investigate the probable roots of this post that you read online. Life as you know it has become stale and boring if something so minute consumes you. I come from a war torn country-- I won't bore you with details but let me tell you, it has made me appreciate life-- so a joke like this should not be considered anything more than what it is-- a joke. Note the title where it says humour will follow-- not racism. BTW, have any of you refused a potential tenant because of certain baggage they carried? No need to answer but I am sure it would be seen as something far greater than what this joke supposedly represents.

My post should have had a NOT in it. My apologies. The joke could have been just as funny if the nationality component was removed - same joke, not offensive or degrading.

For you to dismiss something negative because war is worse is bizarre. I do not think you've thought this through. At what point does an attack on a certain community become of such limited damage that you view it as OK? I would hope the answer if you thought about this was never.

It is a slow day in the small Saskatchewan town of Pumphandle, and the streets are deserted.



Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody is living on
credit. A tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the
motel, and lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the
rooms upstairs to pick one for the night.



As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the
bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher
takes that $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig
farmer. The pig farmer takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the
local escort, who has been facing hard times and has had to offer her
`services` on credit. The escort rushed to the hotel and pays off her
room bill with the hotel owner. The hotel proprietor then places the
$100 back on the counter so the traveler will not suspect anything.



At that moment the tourist comes down the stairs, states that the rooms
are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves.



No
one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town
is now out of debt and looks to the future with a lot more optimism.



And that, ladies and gentlemens, is how a stimulus package works.

Disagree with you on this one Adam.



I think it is truly a credit to the good names of the citizens of Pumphandle - which has not been found to exist - (Pumpkins? or am I impugning them as fruits now by this) that everyone in the chain acted responsibly in paying off their debt in full, without interest or deduction.



Talk about the velocity of money - unless the tourist was somehow infirmed - all this happened really quickly, in the time it took to go up and inspect the room! Was his name Ben or Mark perhaps?



Now if the central banks were equally good at picking the right hotels in the right towns!
