EDMONTON - A 500-km/h high speed train that could travel between Calgary and Edmonton in an hour would attract nearly six million riders by 2021, says a report commissioned by the Alberta government and released Monday.

The report makes no recommendations on the feasibility of the project or whether government money should go into it, but suggests the possibility of a private-public partnership, also known as a P3.

Alberta Transportation Minister Luke Ouellette released the February 2008 report in advance of Monday`s federal-provincial Conservative caucus meeting in Calgary.

He said the report will be presented to a federal standing committee on transport, infrastructure and communities, which meets in September.

"We have not made a decision on a high-speed rail project," Ouellette said. "However, this report is a good step. We will continue to look at all the options in order to support Albertans and the province`s economic future."

Ouellette said the Calgary-Edmonton corridor is a key transportation hub.

The reports looks at ridership, revenues and demand for high-speed rail service and compares the costs and advantages of four different high-speed rail technologies   a 200-km/h diesel electric train, a 240-km/h jet electric train, a 320-km/h overhead electric train and a 500-km/h magnetic levitation train.
