Hi all,

An article from today`s edition of The Province. Excerpts:

The City of Abbotsford finds itself facing a classic Catch-22 as it attempts to accommodate robust population growth.

Opportunities for expansion to the east are inhibited by Sumas Mountain, where costs of installing residential services can be prohibitive.

And to the west, most of the land is in the Agricultural Land Reserve, so it`s protected from development, and is also the foundation of Abbotsford`s highly productive and economically important farming sector.

Hence, the only viable option for new housing is to build upwards, instead of outwards.

However, council`s attempt to encourage higher-density housing in its city centre has now crashed full speed into a wall of public opposition -- the NIMBY (not in my backyard) kind.

However, if Abbotsford fails to build the higher-density housing it knows it`s going to need shortly, some now warn that, instead, it will be laying a foundation for housing shortages and higher prices.
