Consumer anger and pocketbook angst greeted the Stelmach government`s decision Thursday to scrap the province`s natural gas rebate program effective March 31, after handing back$ 2 billion to Albertans over the past six years to help pay high heating bills.
The announcement sparked outrage from some seniors groups and has rural Albertans girding for a financial hit to their operations, although the Liberal opposition and some public interest groups said the move was long overdue.
With the cash-strapped province heading into deficit for the first time in 15 years, and natural gas trading at stubbornly low prices, the Tory government decided to pull the plug on the program.
