CALGARY - Investment adviser Rob Laidlaw says he`s holding onto a shred of hope that Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach might change his mind about hiking oil and gas royalties starting New Year`s Day.

"I wish to heck he would just step away from it," said Laidlaw, vice-president of Acumen Capital Partners in Calgary. "We`re still kind of hoping that Stelmach would come to his senses."

The controversy over Alberta`s new royalty framework came to a head in the fall of 2007, when a government-appointed panel determined Albertans were not getting their "fair share" of the province`s resource wealth.
