Was wondering if anyone can provide insight into cheque certifying...is it true that if you try to certify the cheque at the bank branch where the person has the account (who provided you the cheque) does that make it less likely that the bank will phone/contact them about you trying to certify the cheque and cash it right there and then? (Specifically, any experiences with CIBC?)

Thanks,

Shane

Why do you want to certify a cheque? I ask for the damage deposit and first month rent in cash. After that, personal cheques are fine. If you run a credit cheque or ask for a bank statement when you do the application, I don't see the point of certifying a cheque.

You can certify the cheque at the home branch of the person who wrote the cheque.

As for contacting the person I do not know. Let us know your experience.

As the other poster stated the only place to certify a cheque is at the home branch of the person who issued the cheque to you. In most cases I doubt that they would attempt to contact the person who issued the cheque when you certify it, after all you'll be paying the bank a fee to certify the cheque.

However when you certify the check you are not actually cashing it, you are having money taken out of the issuers bank account and transfered into a special bank controlled account. So you will still need to cash it normally at your bank.

Hi Shane,

The bank will not contact the client that wrote the cheque unless they suspect fraud. The teller would most likely check the clients signature against the signature card the client signed when they opened the account. You will be in a out not to worry.
