A land swap approved by council last night could mean a new addition to the streetscape on Mississaga Street between Peter and Matchedash streets.

Council has agreed to swap around 7,949 square feet of municipal parking lot 5, across from the Brewery Bay Food Co. for 10,329 square feet of land owned by Garry Sawatzky behind 126 Mississaga St.

The property the city will gain is a gravelled parking lot currently utilized for permit parking, known as parking lot 11.

Sawatzky receives frontage on Mississaga Street in the trade.

"It`s the first process to a very, very interesting development there," Mayor Ron Stevens said last night. "It`s a $2 million development that will prove beneficial to the downtown."

Details of the proposed development for the site haven`t been made public.

"I think this is a wonderful opportunity for some redevelopment in the downtown and creating some additional parking in the downtown," Coun. Joe Fecht, the city`s representative on the Downtown Orillia Management Board, said after the closed session report announcing the swap was read out in open council.

Stevens said the city will gain around 13 or 14 parking spots.

"It`s very positive," Fecht said after the meeting.

With significant frontage on Mississaga Street, he said the proposed plans will be a welcome addition to the city`s main street.
