EDMONTON — People trying to improve the image of Edmonton`s 118th Avenue are telling each other "We Believe in 118."

"We`re trying to tell people that this is a safe place in which to work," said Kris Andreychuk, a community service social worker with the Neighbourhood Empowerment Team (NET), one of the groups that initiated the campaign, which was launched Wednesday.

"We are celebrating the vibrancy of the community," said Andreychuk, adding that the campaign is an innovative way to reduce crime in the area.

Members of the Downtown Division District 1 Neighbourhood Empowerment Team, the Edmonton Police Service, the Alberta Avenue Business Association, and the city`s bylaw services department visited businesses along 118th Avenue to talk about the campaign.

The group gave business owners "We Believe in 118" window stickers.

They will also recruit block captains — business owners who will act as the "go to" people for all the other businesses on a particular block should a problem or concern arise.

The block captains would provide a direct link between the businesses in the area and the police, Const. Andrew Larson said.
