Just four years ago, Adi Tatarko and her husband, Alon Cohen, were living
and working full time in the Bay area of California, raising two children.
They decided to embark on a home improvement project to make their home
more
comfortable and had a frustrating experience trying to find the right
contractors to help them accomplish their project. They found that
contractors had frustrations too`customers with unrealistic expectations.
In 2009, the couple started Houzz as a hobby, but within a year it became a
full time business. Today, the Palo, Alto company has over 120 employees
and has received 100,000 five star reviews on iTunes, Apple`s app store.
Houzz is Pinterest for interior design
What exactly is Houzz? It is a Pinterest-like app for people interested in
remodeling and interior design. A CNN correspondent said, `At its core,
Houzz is an addictive, never-ending gallery of luscious images of home
interiors and exteriors. Its website and apps are popular resources for
people who idly dream of redoing their homes or moving into new ones.`
2 million images uploaded to Houzz
The home Improvement Research
Institute predicts home improvement revenues
to hit $287 billion this year, which illustrates just how hot the industry
is right now. About 15 million people a month search Houzz for home
improvement and design ideas. The library is extensive, containing over 2
million images. Users can save images to ideabooks and view DIY home
improvement tutorials or contact an expert to come effect the desired
renovation. Many of the images are uploaded by interior designers and
architects, over 250,000 of which are active on Houzz. These contractors
showcase their previous work, including with their photo their location and
contact information. This enables Houzz users to then get in touch with the
contractors whose work they like best.
Users find local contractors
Another attractive aspect of Houzz is its reviews, which enable people to
read what past customers thought of each contractor. You can also
search
locally for contractors instead of wading through an entire nation`s worth
of possibilities. Houzz has broken the country up into 425 metro areas for
its users to peruse.
According to a survey conducted on Houzz of 100,000 people, `84% of
respondents were planning to decorate or redecorate, 40% were considering
remodeling or building an addition, and 10% were planning on building a
custom home.`
