Hi there,

I am in the process of renovating our basement into a secondary suite. We have had certified electricians and plumbers in to do the work, but have not gotten it signed off by the city inspectors. We are concerned that tthe inspectors will note we are making it into a suite (which will be illegal in Calgary due to not having separate heating systems)-and force us to shut it down.

Does anyone know the insurance implications if something were to happen in this suite? Should we get it inspected and signed off and just call it a 'mother in law suite'-which I believe doesn't have to have separate furnace?

My insurance company has said that unless we comply with Calgary bylaws regarding code compliance, we 'may not' be covered by insurance.

thanks so much
