Hi all,
I was recently looking at some GST registration documents and I referred to `GST/HST Memoranda Series` (2.1 Required Registration) for guidance. In the Memoranda under `Definition of Person` reference is made to the following categories of `Person`:

[*]Individual or Sole Proprietor;[*]Partnerships;[*]Partnerships and Sole Proprietors;[*]Corporation;[*]Estate of A Deceased Indivdual or A Trust;Segregated Fund - Deemed Trust;Bankrupt;A Body (union, association etc.);Unincorporated Bodies; andJoint Ventures
.Under `Joint Ventures` it says:

A joint venture is not a person, and therefore, cannot register for the GST/HST. However, a participant in a joint venture
may be required to be registered in which case it must account for the tax on its commercial activities, including its share of the joint venture activities, unless a joint venture election has been made. Additional information about joint ventures and the election will be available in Capter 3, Tax on Supplies.

Below this is `Definition of Commercial Activity`.

I am not a commodity tax guy. The link to the Canada Revenue Agency`s GST/HST Memoranda Series (By Chapters) is - http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/menu/GTMS-e.html. If you are a participant in a joint venture you can check here or discuss with your accountant to determine if this might be an issue for you.
