Edmonton`s first new LRT stations in three years open next weekend as part of a major expansion expected to double ridership when it`s finished in 2010.
"Unlike our other system, where we`re basically going through industrial areas or coliseums or other areas, we`re now entering the residential market," transportation general manager Bob Boutilier said Friday during an advance tour of the
McKernan/Belgravia and South Campus stops.
"Now we will really see the payback for having the LRT."
Planners say the 2.3-kilometre extension from the last station opened, at Health Sciences, should boost daily LRT boardings to 65,000 from 50,000.
That figure is expected to leap to 100,000 once the entire 7.5-kilometre southern line to Century Park, the former Heritage Mall, is completed next April.
