Tembec today cancelled a planned shutdown of its Skookumchuck pulp mill, one week after it announced it and two days after the federal government delivered $1 billion in aid to the forest sector.

The shut-down was set to begin June 29 and was to last at least two weeks.

The program is a factor in the decision to keep the mill operating, a Tembec official said.

"While market conditions remain difficult, the recently announced Green Transformation Program and some modest improvement in pulp pricing and in fibre economics have sufficiently altered operating conditions to the point where running the mill is a better course of action," said Tembec executive vice president Yvon Pelletier.

Ottawa announced the program Wednesday in response to a $7-billion black liquor subsidy program in the U.S. that has distorted pulp production costs, making American mills the lowest cost producers in the world.
