More Corollas, More Jobs Expected in Cambridge
CAMBRIDGE — Toyota is expected to shift production of the Matrix crossover vehicle from Cambridge to Woodstock within the next year to make room for more output of the popular Corolla compact, in a move that should create as many as 500 new jobs, sources say.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. wouldn`t confirm the move yesterday, but sources familiar with the automaker`s plans said the company will increase output of the Corolla and Matrix in Cambridge starting next month in advance of the transfer.
After building extra inventory of the Matrix, Toyota will briefly stop its production, move tooling to the Woodstock plant, about 50 kilometres away, and then hire more full-time workers for that operation, the sources said.
The company`s Japanese parent is closing a California assembly plant — which currently builds the Corolla and Tacoma pickup — next March and shifting the compact`s production to Cambridge and Japan and the truck`s output to San Antonio, Texas.
That plant, a joint venture with General Motors called New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI), also assembled the Pontiac Vibe crossover model, which ceased production last month

Hamilton`s dead. Or is it?
The angular, unloved edifices of Hamilton City Hall—designed in the International Style and built in 1960, when the city`s future seemed pretty bright—were finally being gutted and stripped of their cladding as part of a major renovation. So on a Wednesday night in the middle of May, Hamilton`s 15 councillors gathered in their temporary chambers in the Albion Room of the Hamilton Convention Centre. They wore red carnations in support of a good cause and, before he took his seat, one of the councillors, Tom Jackson, rhythmically tossed a hockey puck in the air. "This is my good luck charm," he said.
The council, that night, was to formally approve a deal that would clear any local impediments to bringing an NHL franchise to the city—leasing Copps Coliseum, and a couple of other downtown properties, to the co-CEO of Research In Motion, Jim Balsillie, who wanted to buy the Phoenix Coyotes and move them north. To many in Hamilton, the idea that the NHL might at long last return to the city, 85 years after it left, seemed a tantalizing improbability, like getting a date with the prettiest girl on campus. Ron Joyce, the co-founder of Tim Hortons and the last man who`d tried to bring an NHL franchise to Hamilton, had already gone public with his doubts, calling it "a 10% chance." Voting to approve a lease deal with Balsillie was, therefore, a bit like Hamilton checking its teeth in the mirror in case that pretty girl should look its way.

Canadian auto sales slow 7.9% in August
August was a month of extremes for vehicle sales
in Canada, with some major auto makers posting double-digit losses and others posting double-digit gains.
Data from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants shows overall vehicles sales in Canada were down 7.9 per cent in August to 135,351 compared to 146,978 a year earlier.
Ford Motor Co. of Canada Ltd. (F-N7.24-0.36-4.74%) had a tentative grip on top market share for two months in a row, but was edged out of that spot by General Motors
of Canada Ltd. in August.
GM`s Canadian sales fell by 27.5 per cent year-over-year to 23,018, but the struggling auto maker still managed to grab the largest portion of the market at 17.6 per cent.

GM Reclaims top spot in Canada in July
General Motors Co. reclaimed its spot as Canada`s top vehicle seller last month as the industry posted another single-digit sales decline.
Research from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. showed GM sold just over 23,000 vehicles last month, besting Ford Motor Co. by roughly 850 units. Ford had snatched the sales crown from GM earlier this year after its cross-town Detroit rival faltered under bankruptcy protection.
"Rebuilding our inventory levels in August, has improved our sales performance," Marc Comeau, GM of Canada`s vice-president of sales, service and marketing, said in a statement. "We are positioned to capitalize on the growing market momentum."
Automakers sold 135,351 cars and trucks in all last month, a 7.9% decline over August 2008, DesRosiers research showed. July sales were down 6.4%, the first single-digit decline since auto sales tanked last October.
"I guess one could say that is an improvement from the double digit declines through most of the past year. But understand that there is little in these number to indicate that things are getting better," said industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers.

The vast majority of residential real estate transactions close as scheduled, without problems or disputes. The chances of any given real estate deal resulting in litigation involving the buyers, sellers and real estate agents increase dramatically when the agents insist that the sellers complete a disclosure document called the Sellers Property Information Statement (SPIS).
The form is published by the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA).
An increasing tide of court cases from across the country is evidence that the forms provide an endless source of income for litigation lawyers, and a bottomless pit of grief and expense to the parties involved in the transaction.
An Ontario Superior Court decision released earlier this year is yet another example of how dangerous these forms are and why OREA and some of its member boards should bear the blame for promoting them.
Back in 2002, Maria Lunney purchased a 90-year old Ottawa duplex for $180,000 from Jana Kuntova. The listing agent was Masoud Badre, an employee of Re/Max Metro City. The house was described in the sale listing as having a "stone, stucco" exterior with a "stone" foundation.
