Saskatchewan is the only province in Canada to see its helpwanted index fall in the latest report by the Conference Board of Canada.
After falling 8.2 points in June, the index dropped 10.7 points in July to sit at 266 points
But Conference Board economist Julie Ades said people shouldn't be too concerned with the falling numbers.
"It's not alarming because the index has been following an upward trend over the last few months," she said. "Yes, the index fell in June and July, but those two declines were not strong enough to offset the gains that were recorded in the previous months."
Employment rose by 20,100 in August over the same period last year, an increase of 3.8 per cent - the highest percentage increase among the provinces, according to figures released Friday by Statistics Canada.
The unemployment rate fell by 0.6 per cent in August to 4.4 per cent - tied with Alberta for the lowest unemployment rate in the nation and well below the national average of 7.3 per cent.
"I think it's very encouraging to see the numbers we are seeing," Energy Minister Tim McMillan told reporters Friday, noting Saskatchewan now has the fastest job growth and the lowest unemployment rate in the country.
Regina August housing starts double last year's pace
A total of 248 housing units were started in the Regina area last month, more than double the 114 starts posted in August 2011, mainly due to a surge in multi-family starts, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC).
Regina-area builders poured foundations for 117 single-detached units in August compared with 99 a year earlier, CMHC said in its monthly survey of residential construction Tuesday.
Multi-family housing starts, which consist of semi-detached, units, row houses, and apartments, totalled 131 units in August, a nearly 10-fold increase over the 15 multi-family units started during the same period last year.
WINNIPEG'S multi-family homebuilding sector is on fire, with the number of starts up 74 per cent from a year earlier and on pace to hit their highest annual level in 25 years.
New figures from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. Tuesday show there were 1,355 multi-family units started in the first eight months this year in the Winnipeg Census Metropolitan Area (CMA).
That already surpasses the total for all of last year, which was 1,329 units. It's not far off the 1,501 starts recorded in 2007, the best year since 1987 for multi-family housing construction in the city.
Manitoba predicted to outperform most of the country in home sales next year
WINNIPEG ` Manitoba`s resale-homes market will outperform most other provincial markets in 2013, according to the latest forecast from the Canadian Real Estate Association.
CREA predicted today that Manitoba and Alberta will be the only provinces to see an increase in Multiple Listing Service (MLS) sales next year. It predicts Manitoba`s sales will rise by 0.7 per cent to 14,250 units, while Alberta will see a 1.7 per cent gain.
It also predicts that Manitoba will post the biggest increase in average selling price in 2013, at three per cent ($251,300 versus a projected $243,900 this year).
REGINA ` Job vacancy numbers released by Statistics Canada Tuesday confirm that Saskatchewan`s tight labour market, with its low unemployment rate and a high number of unfilled positions, is getting tighter.
The job vacancy rate ` the ratio of unfilled jobs to total jobs (unfilled jobs plus occupied positions) ` in Saskatchewan rose to 3.2 per cent in June from 2.2 per cent in June 2011, one of the largest increases among the provinces, Statistics Canada said.
Saskatchewan should outpace rest of country through 2013
Against the background of the European sovereign debt/currency crisis and the sub-par pattern of growth in the United States, the Saskatchewan economy appears to be growing at a healthy pace, as it approaches 2013.
Probably the clearest evidence of the province`s economic health is that since the beginning of the year, total employment in the province has increased by 14,000, in sharp contrast to the net loss of 1,500 jobs recorded in the first eight months of 2011.
Moreover, the majority of jobs (13,600) created year to date are full time and in the private sector. Across major industrial groups, significant job gains occurred in public administration, education services, information services, forestry and mining, construction and agriculture.
