Steve
Jobs has died.

iSad !

Despite all his billions he could not stay alive due to pancreatic cancer.

It reminds us all that we are not ultimately in control of our destiny. I often say: "Man plans .. and God laughs" (or weeps today).

Steve played an influential, yet very distant, role in my life ! He is
only 5 years older and I was a nerdy teen in the tech wave of the late
70's when PCs and Macs started. Computer Science,
software development, windows, mouse, GUIs,
Open Software, Lisa, Next.. later Java, .. all that stuff I found fascinating in
my late teens / early 20's .. and to a lesser degree still today !

I was always immensely found of Silicon
Valley [and still are], went there often before, during and after my IBM
career. In 1984 I spent a week at Stanford campus with a friend from Munich where he did an MBA. I sold my imported German Mercedes in Palo Alto admiring
Silicon Valley, Stanford/Palo Alto area and generally all things "California" such as beaches, babes, music, software, palm trees, convertibles, hills, smells, ... ).

It was possibly the inspiration of Steve Jobs and the
Stanford Campus time that I did my MBA in Edmonton, AB after my Computer Science degree. I later worked at [and eventually co-owned] an IBM business partner based in Palo Alto where most of the money for the early years of my real estate career came from, and perhaps why today I live on the edge of the UBC Campus.

One never knows what person or what decision in life takes one where 2 or 22 years later !

Steve Jobs was a
great marketing genius, an immense driver (well depicted in the very funny and historically accurate movie
"Pirates of the Valley"), high performance leader and inspirator !

The
world will miss him and his unique designs & vision !!

May God bless him and his family .. although he may have never known Him !

Some bio and details of his life here:

WOW! That's big news alright.

Thomas, we share a similar background somewhat as I spent 25 years in IT related work until I just got fed up with working for someone else. I've seen IBM 3084/3090s and the introduction of the 8088/86 286/386 PCs, worked at host of software companies that either IPO'd, got bought out, and/or faded into the sunset. Fondly recall machines with 1 MB RAM being touted as more robust than the base 640K, an having a massive 30 MB Hard Drive (ooooh). How it has changed. My cordless phone today has more memory,

Spent a little time too in Silicon Valley. Palo Alto and H.P., Seattle and Microsoft. Steve Jobs news is amazing, but somehow expected. You're right. You never know when your number is up.

Glad I have made my life decision, even if it did come late. Only in the last 4 years have I felt confident enough to break out on my own in the realm of real estate investing and can't begin to describe the freedom the move has afforded me and my family. We do Florida every year for a month. Just take off with the wife and 4 kids, all under age 10. It might not make me a millionaire, but I can do things while self employed that I would never conceive in a regular 9-5.

Really appreciate your contribution to the forum. I always look forward to your posts and responses to questions.

Cheers

Tony
