Hi everyone,
with the hype and excitement that is building around the Olympics I am surprised this hasn`t been a more talked about subject. Maybe we have bigger things these days like "Do agents earn their money" and "why is the MLS restricted" These are definitely some hot topics with great points on both sides.
I am about to write a blog post and wanted to get your input. What do you think the long term effects of the Olympics will have on the Vancouver and BC and Canadian markets? I know we have some local experts out there and would love to hear your opinion.
If I look back to the Calgary 88 games they really had no impact on the market. I think they just sold the Olympic village condos a couple of years ago.
I think short term you get a pop in price because of the trades that you have to bring in to build the infrastructure.....but do people stay long term? Do you really move to Vancouver because they had the games in 2010? I don`t really think so.
I think most of the benefit of hosting the games comes from infrastructure improvements. The Sea to Sky highway for example.
Here in Canmore a few people will argue that we were put on the map because of the Olympics and that is what started our housing boom. I am not sure that I buy the argument but it is out there none the less. We will have to see what Whistler does post games to confirm or deny this theory.
If you look at Intrawest and Fortress they took big bets on the Games but they are in a world of financing trouble these days and I am not so sure that those bets are going to be realized any time soon.
What are your thoughts?
