EADS invests to expand Gatineau development centre

EADS, the European defence contractor, plans to hire about 35 new engineers and technical staff and expand a development centre in Gatineau.

They are to provide global support for the Project 25 digital communications systems, a new product line aimed at police, fire and emergency crews responding to natural disasters and terrorist events.

EADS, which makes the Airbus aircraft, is counting on the new product line to break into the North American market.

Property assessments set to climb sharply

Hamilton homes are worth on average 22.5 per cent more than in 2005, according to Ontario`s Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC), which is sending owners notices of its new valuations this week.

Increases will now be phased in over four years, so Hamilton homeowners will see their assessments go up an average of 5.6 per cent each year from 2009 through 2012. Decreases will be applied immediately.

Council adds seats, redraws ward map

KITCHENER

In the next municipal election, voters will choose 10 councillors and a mayor.

City councillors yesterday approved a new electoral map, adding four seats to the council table.

"I think it is a balanced approach," Mayor Carl Zehr said of the boundaries that will come into effect in 2010.

The Cherry Park Neighbourhood Association opposed using the Iron Horse Trail as the border between the new wards eight and nine in the northwest. This divides the association and will make two councillors responsible for an area now represented by one, Debra Chapman, the association president, said.

Guelph property owners will see an average jump in the assessed value of their property of 4.8 per cent next year, the first phase in a much larger assessment increase.

"Residential property values have increased by approximately 19.5 per cent in Guelph since 2005, when the last assessment update was done," said Jon Hebden, a spokesperson for the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation`s Kitchener office.
