A lot is riding on Viva bus expansion

When it comes to transit, it doesn`t get more basic than the bus.

But York Region has been stepping up the basic bus since 2005 with its branded, frequent express Viva service.

Now comes VivaNext, a plan to increase York`s mass transit.

Under the plan, the current fleet of 90 express buses will expand to about 197. They will travel on their own right-of-way lanes, called rapidways, on the Yonge St. and Highway 7 corridors. The express service will connect with the Finch, Downsview and Don Mills subway stations, plus new stations on the extended Yonge and Spadina subway lines.

McGuinty braces for tough times

Back in June, Premier Dalton McGuinty`s Air Canada flight made an emergency landing in Las Vegas returning from a business trip to sunny California.

Its pressure seal broken high over the coastal mountains, the jet began an urgent descent and circled the desert to burn off fuel for hours in endless turbulence that left dozens of passengers hunched over airsickness bags.

City has ability to deflect economic meltdown: official

The city`s diverse workforce and economy should help position Barrie to weather the tough times already here, and those to come in 2009.

"Barrie is more insulated from a recession than it was in the past -- partly because of the large public sector employers, but also because we have diversified our economy over the past two decades," said Coun. Jeff Lehman, chairman of the city finance committee.

Highway 407 toll fares going up Feb. 1

Highway 407 toll fares are rising. Starting Feb. 1, drivers will have to pay a new trip toll charge of 25 cents for each time they take a drive on the highway.

407 ETR Concession Company Ltd., which operates and manages Highway 407, is also raising the peak-hour tolls nearly two cents to 19.85 cents per kilometre. Peak hours are weekdays between 6 and 10 a.m. and 3 and 7 p.m. Rates for off-peak hours remain at 18 cents per kilometre.

Highway 6 fix is closer, but factions far apart

Deep divisions remain over the long-delayed realignment of Highway 6 to connect with the Hanlon Expressway and bypass the community of Morriston as it connects with a busy stretch of blacktop heading to Hamilton.

"The whole damn thing is a hazard," said Dan Blair, co-president of the Morriston Tract Conservation Association, a group critical of the project, which requires cutting a swath through bush south of Highway 401 near Morriston to build the five-kilometre connecting link and access roads.

Local firms bullish on outlook for 2009

Hamilton`s business community may think Ontario`s economy is headed for dark days in 2009, but they also see a brighter road for their own companies.

A survey conducted by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce found that 86 per cent of Hamilton business leaders who responded believe the province`s economy will be much weaker or somewhat weaker this year.

Hespeler upgrades along Speed River may have to wait

CAMBRIDGE

The city has set aside $625,000 to spruce up downtown Hespeler along the Speed River, but staff advise not spending any of it.

At least for now.

Instead, city staff recommend waiting until the end of a protracted process to buy land that is now a parking lot at 13 Queen St. W.

What`s in store for housing market in 2009

At Christmastime a year ago, Toronto-area realtors had good reason to celebrate. The year ended with record high sales and the industry never looked healthier.

"Home buyers had to stop at Chapters last year for reading material just to stand in line for a condo," says realtor Mike Donia. "The banks were lending you money hand over fist."

One year later the turnaround has been dramatic and unprecedented.

Inspections: If these walls could talk

After almost a year of living in their new townhouse in Uxbridge, Libby McCready and her husband figured there was little wrong with their home. But Libby`s parents, who had bought several new houses over the years, urged them to take the time to fill out the Tarion new home warranty program`s one-year report listing any issues.

Condo Critic: Where east never meets west

Standing at the corner of Parliament and Wellesley, a visitor to Toronto would be hard-pressed to guess that one of the city`s most desirable neighbourhoods, Cabbagetown, is just metres away. The way it works in this part of town, boundaries are as specific as one side of the street versus the other. On Wellesley east of Parliament, the sidewalks are lined with trees and renovated Victorian houses, each more exquisite than the next. To the west, however, everything changes. Though the south side of Wellesley still boasts two or three blocks of 19th-century, mostly Second Empire row houses, modernity intrudes abruptly.

Foreclosures mounting

With the economy limping, London process servers have been racing to keep up with a slew of foreclosures, the likes of which they haven`t seen since the early 1980s. "It`s unfortunate that when times are bad, we are busy," Doug Russell of London and Western Ontario Process Servers said yesterday.

Q
Some of our directors wish to conduct our board meetings through e-mails. They said this would eliminate in-depth discussions and meetings would be terminated much more quickly. Is this method legal? I prefer to meet with a board to discuss matters and since we all live within a few feet of each other, this is not an inconvenience. Your comments would be appreciated.

Church moving into mall

Anyone doing a little church shopping will have a new option at the downtown mall where Freedom House is moving its base of operations.

The 22-year-old mall, which has been slowly dissolving its retail base, has welcomed the young church to the lower level of the building, next to some of the City of Brantford offices.

It`s a very alternative location for a very alternative church.

Construction delays irk residents

Residents in a small community near the Canadian Golf and Country Club are asking the premier to help them get a long-promised access road to Highway 7 west of Highway 417.

They are irate because their former access road, Westleigh Boulevard, was closed recently, forcing them to take a circuitous route to enter and leave the community of about 125 upscale homes. The detour will remain in effect until the City of Ottawa builds a new road.

City buys office building in downtown core

The City of Brampton has bought an office building in the downtown core for $13.6 million as a short-term solution to its administrative space needs.

The purchase of 8 Nelson St. is conditional, and the city has 90 days (from Nov. 26) to conduct "due diligence" which will consist of a building audit covering all angles, including structural, environmental, electrical, financial, legal and realty.

`Ball in developers` court`: Carr

There will be no easing into the new year for Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. Instead, the longtime politician will find out this week the results of council`s move this past fall to freeze the servicing of future residential developments in Halton region unless developers ante up more of an upfront cost for each home they build.

Cambridge`s goofy telephone system won`t be changing soon

CAMBRIDGE -- Fixing the city`s fractured telephone districts is on hold.

Cambridge`s request that Bell Canada create a more uniform system for Cambridge has been stalled by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission because of an appeal by another phone company, Telus.

Overland Hotel gets a new look

The Old Overland Hotel, like a Phoenix, has risen from the ashes. On Dec. 18, 2006 the Cambridge Fire Department was on scene when a fire broke out in the building which forced its evacuation and closure.

Owner Jim Litster had purchased the building earlier in the year with an eye to eventually rejuvenating the century old working class hotel. Following the fire, Litster was forced to implement those plans sooner than anticipated.
