Health care takes back seat to economy

REGINA -- In an election campaign that`s been dominated by minutiae like sweater vests and pooping puffins and big issues like economic tumult and climate change, health care has seemingly been an afterthought.

While the NDP and Liberals have put out health-care proposals, there has been little significant national debate on the state of the health-care system so far.

And while some opinion polls have pegged health as the second-most important issue to Canadians, candidates say that on the doorstep it`s been overshadowed by the No. 1 concern -- the economy.

Saskatchewan Advantage snags torch from Alberta

If you have been wondering where the heck the so-called Alberta Advantage has gone -- as it seems so many of us have of late -- here`s the answer: to Saskatchewan.

We`re not talking specifically about the advantage that automatically comes with being an emerging global energy superpower. Or the fiscal options that come with not having a provincial debt. Or, for that matter, the benefit of having billions of dollars of royalty revenues to spend any way your premier`s little heart desires.

Warming to a hot idea

ESTLIN -- Waste heat that used to go up the stack at this natural gas pipeline compressor station here is now generating enough electricity to power 5,000 homes -- and leaving no carbon footprint.

The Estlin waste heat recovery unit, located about 30 km southeast of Regina, is the last of four such stations to be completed by NRGreen Power, a sister company of Alliance Pipeline, at Alliance`s four compressor stations in Saskatchewan.

Sask. residents continue to spend

Saskatchewan set a record for retail sales in July and tied another former have-not province in having the highest year-over-year increase in sales among the provinces, according to a report released by Statistics Canada today.

Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador posted the highest increase in sales among the provinces at 13.7 per cent between July 2007 and July 2008. Sales totaled $1.3 billion in the province in July.

Project helps homeowners improve energy efficiency

REGINA -- Last winter, Gwen Bondzuk got a chilly reminder of the need to improve the energy efficiency of her Regina home.

"During one of the bad storms, snow had drifted underneath the backdoor. I had to go downstairs in a hurry and stepped into about three inches of snow in my bare feet," Bondzuk recalled.

"At 6.a.m., I woke the whole house up," she added with a laugh.

Gas prices drive inflation

Saskatchewan`s inflation rate increased by three per cent in August compared with the same month last year, driven mainly by a 22-per-cent increase in gasoline prices over the 12-month period, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

In Alberta, it was a 74-per-cent rise in natural gas prices over the previous 12 months that contributed largely to rising consumer prices in August.

Invest in a tangible asset -- farmland!

If your investment statements are making you turn green, perhaps you need a little more "green" in your portfolio, namely Saskatchewan farmland.

That`s what Agriculture Development Corp., a Regina-based company that pioneered the concept of investing in farmland three years ago, wants investors to think about during this period of market volatility.

Biotechnology a growth industry

REGINA -- More genetically modified crops must be developed if agricultural producers are to meet the challenge of global food shortages and climate change, delegates at a Biotech Week event were told Thursday.

"Technology prevented mass starvation in the 20th century," said David Dennis, CEO of Performance Plants Inc., which operates plant biotechnology facilities in Saskatoon, Kingston, Ont., and New York.

Buyers, sellers beware of online deals

If an Internet deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

On Friday, the Saskatchewan RCMP Commercial Crime Section issued a fraud alert because of increasing fraud attempts in the province relating to the sale and purchase of items on the Internet.

"Due diligence on the part of both the buyer and the seller is important," said RCMP Cpl. Kelly Hall.

Fifty Saskatchewan companies will promote job opportunities in the province at the National Job Fair in Toronto on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Premier Brad Wall and Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris were in White City on Friday, to send Saskatchewan`s contingent off. They will join the Saskatchewan companies at Canada`s largest career exhibition next week.

"I think there is no substitute for getting our message out directly," Wall said in front of the SaskJobs semi-trailer truck, full of supplies for the province`s 50 exhibitors.
