I hope they bring the secondary suite registry program to Edmonton. It is such a great consumer protection for tenants and raises the bar for safe secondary market housing. This is a really positive step.
A caution to "illegal" suite potential buyers: keep in mind you are not buying a basement income stream. You are buying a single family house with one suite (the main floor) and a basement liability. If you have second furnace requirements and need to redo windows, think about the number $50 / basement SF. I have lots of data to back this up.
I'll be passing this info one on to Edmonton's new Infill Committee. Glad to see that Calgary is setting the bar at a new level. I'm thrilled to see this new layer of protection for tenants and suite purchasers. ~ 60 - 70% of the suites I've seen in Edmonton are crap developments completed ad-hoc or DIY. I'd love to see a lot of this garbage out of the market.
