Northern Gateway setback could mean opportunity for aboriginal energy proposals
VANCOUVER - A First Nations-backed organization has partnered with the Aquilini Group to propose a new pipeline to compete with the struggling Enbridge Northern Gateway project.
Eagle Spirit Energy and Aquilini stated Monday they have stolen support from two First Nations bands in Burns Lake and Fraser Lake who had granted conditional support for the Enbridge route and have now switched allegiance.
A modest supply shortage and continuing low interest rates kept sales up in Greater Victoria`s real estate market in the start of this year, says a report from the Re/Max real estate group. `Buyers in Victoria are keen to take advantage of the favourable lending environment, however many in the market had bet on taking advantage of a market correction that never materialized,` said the report released Tuesday.
Coal mine closures a devastating shock to Tumbler Ridge
VANCOUVER - Walter Energy`s decision to idle two mines and temporarily lay off 700 workers at its two northeastern British Columbia mines is `a devastating shock` for Tumbler Ridge, Mayor Darwen Wren said Tuesday.
`It comes as quite a shock for people to go to work and find out they no longer have a job,` Wren said of the U.S.-based company`s announcement earlier Tuesday, a decision it blamed on difficult market conditions and lower prices. `Certainly, we`ve been nervous over the last few months because the price of metallurgical coal had been declining. It`s 400-plus jobs (for Tumbler Ridge). That`s an enormous hit to a community of 4,000 people.`
